  Tanaidacea: Families - Index
This ecological ignorance of the Tanaidacea is caused by the immense difficulties associated with identifying these animals.
Therefore the systematics of Tanaidacea is not fully resolved at this stage and the families are thus not very stable or well defined.
Due to the small size of most Tanaidacea and particularly members of the suborder Tanaidomorpha, identification to family level cannot always be achieved without dissection of mouthparts.

Initial efforts were focused on compiling information concerning research contributions made subsequent to 1986, the last year that an issue of the newsletter, "Tanaidacea News" [#19], was assembled and distributed by Jürgen Sieg.
At present, the primary focus is on improving the utility of an interactive database which was developed and introduced in early 2003.
General morphological characteristics for the Order Tanaidacea include 1) a carapace formed via fusion of the first two thoracic somites, 2) chelate first periopods, 3) six free thoracic somites, 4) five abdominal somites bearing pleopods and 5) a pleotelson with a pair of terminal or subterminal uropods.

DEEPWATER TANAIDACEA (CRUSTACEA: NEOTANAIDAE) FROM THE LADINIAN (MIDDLE TRIASSIC) OF HUNGARY
The only previous tanaidaceans described from the Triassic are nondiagnostic chela from the Rhaetian (Late Triassic) of Hungary that were originally placed in the genus Ophthalmapseudes but subsequently referred to the apseudomorph genus Jurapseudes.
The material described here supports the view of Schram and others that the radiation of the modern Tanaidacea occurred by the end of the Mesozoic.

In the Decapoda three pairs are thus modified, and in the Tanaidacea, Isopoda and Amphipoda only one.
In the primitive Malacostraca the gills were probably, as in the Phyllopoda and in Nebalia, the modified epipodites of the thoracic limbs, and this is the condition found in some Schizopoda.
Among the Malacostraca some Schizopoda, the Cumacea, Tanaidacea, Isopoda and Amphipoda (sometimes grouped all together as Peracarida) have a marsupium or brood-pouch formed by overlapping plates attached to the bases of some of the thoracic legs.
