While the north side of the Tanana Valley may not be moving downward, the uplift on the south side does result in tipping of the region.
One of the consequences is the construction of a major dike near Fairbanks to hold the Tanana River away from the town.

Tanana is the host school to this tournament which is the premier wrestling tournament in the state of Alaska.
The Tanana Invitational Wrestling Tournament is the largest annual school sponsored sporting event in the state of Alaska and is considered by many to be the "unofficial junior high state tournament".

 History of the Tanana Valley Railroad
The Tanana Valley Railroad (TVRR), a 3 foot narrow-gauge operation, extended from Chena, a settlement on the Tanana River, to Fairbanks, with a branch to Chatanika.
In 1907, the railroad was refinanced under a new name, the Tanana Valley Railroad and on May 15, 1907, construction began on the second phase of the TVRR, an extension of the trackage to Chatanika.
All of the equipment was renamed to reflect the new ownership and the Tanana Valley Railroad became a memory of days gone by.

 Building the Railroad: Tanana Valley
The Tanana Valley Railroad (TVRR) began life as the Tanana Mines Railway.
Residents of the area needed a dependable, year-around means of transportation to move people and supplies to and from the mines.
The route was originally planned to go over Cleary Summit, but new mining activity in the Dome, Vault, Ridgetop and Olnes areas caused the railroad to be routed up the Fox Creek Valley to meet the needs of the new communities.

It was built in 1899 and operated in a Dawson coal mine until Falcon Joslin bought it for his Tanana Valley Railroad, where it ran locally from 1905 until 1923 or '24.
The running gear is all original, but the cab has been reconstructed and the boiler replaced.
The Friends of the Tanana Valley Railroad are hoping to have the 100 year old engine running again by Golden Days 1999, and then to operate it on the narrow gauge Alaskaland tracks for special occasions.
