Taney began his political career in (A Mid-Atlantic state; one of the original 13 colonies) Maryland in 1799 as a (An advocate of federalism) Federalist, elected at age 22 to the House of Delegates.
Taney was appointed Attorney General of Maryland in 1827, then became Jackson's (The position of the head of the Justice Department and the chief law enforcement officer of the United States) Attorney General in 1831.
Taney and his colleagues did, however, depart from their support for state sovereignty in one area: state laws restricting the rights of slaveholders.

Taney was born to a wealthy slave-owning family that raised tobacco in Calvert County, Maryland.
Taney began his political career in Maryland in 1799 as a Federalist, elected at age 22 to the House of Delegates.
Taney broke with the national leadership of the Federalist Party when it opposed the War of 1812, but remained within the party, taking over leadership of it in Maryland in 1816, when he was elected to the State Senate.

Taney County officially organized in 1837, but most of the official records were destroyed in a courthouse fire during 1885.
County residents felt slighted by the commissioners' decision, and in 1841 they succeeded in getting legislation authorizing the election of county commissioners by county residents.
According to Ingenthron, in about 1855 the county got permission from the state to borrow from the internal improvement fund to build a three-story, brick courthouse at Forsyth; it came to be regarded as one of the finest buildings in the White River region.

Health officials in Taney County, Missouri say tests have confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in at least five birds and in a batch of trapped mosquitoes near Lake Taneycomo in late August.
Taney County Health Department director Jim Berry says the tests are the first positive results in his county this year.
Berry says physicians in the area have been informed about the results, so they may be aware of the possibility if they have patients displaying flu-like symptoms.
