TORNADOES IN THE DISTRICTS OF JAMALPUR AND TANGAIL IN BANGLADESH
The places I visited and contacted in the district of Tangail were Tangail district office, Tangail general hospital, Thana nirbari offices in six thanas (Gopalpur, Ghatail, Kalihati, Basail, Sakhipur, and Mirzapur), and field surveys in two villages in the Basail thana and one in the Sakhipur thana.
In the district of Tangail, 585 persons died, of which 54 were outsiders, day labourers from outside of the area.

Tangail police and RAB launched drives in the district and recovered a huge quantity of explosives, and arrested about 40 alleged JMB militants, including members of the suicide squad, during the last one month.
It is gathered that 30 JMB suicide squad members have been recruited from Tangail district who are trained and staying at different parts of the country of launch attack.

Christian Aid's team in Bangladesh reports that much of the country is still affected by flooding in low-lying areas and, although waters are receding in most places, it is possible that heavy rain in neighbouring India could still worsen the situation.

DHAKA, Jan 18: At least seven people were killed and 15 others injured on Friday night when two bombs exploded at a rural fair attended by several thousand followers of a saint in Tangail, a northwestern district of Bangladesh.
The explosion occurred at a time a judicial investigation into a similar explosion in four cinemas in Mymensingh district, adjacent to Tangail, is in progress.

 Western Resistance: Bangladesh: Islamist Threat Against Jails
The banned Islamist group Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) has written a letter in Arabic and Bangla to the Superintendent of Tangail District Jail, Shamsul Alam Bhuiyan.
The letter contained a threat to blow up the Tangail District Jail in seven days' time, if police did not desist from making arrests of or detaining JMB activists.
According to the Daily Star, the threat is being taken seriously, and all jails are now being asked to retain a high state of vigilance.

DHAKA - Bangladesh has deployed troops to protect an embankment being eroded by a flooded river threatening hundreds of homes north of Dhaka, officials said late last week.
Rahmat Jan Sikder, police superintendent in Tangail, 150 km (90 miles) north of Dhaka, said troops had been deployed at Gopalpur in the Tangail district on the Jamuna river.
A flood protection dam was also breached by the Jamuna in northern Bogra district, flooding several villages, local officials said.
