A narrow strip of coast between Thailand on the east and the Andaman Sea on the west, Tanintharyi extends south for c.400 mi (650 km) from Mon State to the Isthmus of Kra and includes many offshore islands.
Tanintharyi was long subject in turn to Siam and Myanmar, but remained in Burmese hands when the long wars of the Thai and Burmese ended late in the 18th cent.
As a result of the first Anglo-Burmese War (182426), Tanintharyi passed under British rule.
Capital of TanintharyiDivision is the southern most administrative region in the country.
TanintharyiDivision occupies a long narrow coastal plain bounded by the Andaman Sea in the east, which runs to Kawthaung, the most southerly point of Myanmar and which then continues to the Malaya Peninsula.
Tanintharyi has been the country's largest rubber producer since first introduced into Myanmar via Myeik port in 1876.

MYANMAR (UNION OF) Myanmar: Ethnic minorities: Targets of repression(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
This information is based on interviews with refugees in Thailand during February 2001.(5) The interviewees, almost all of whom are subsistence farmers, fled from their homes because of demands for forced labour and arbitrary taxation, torture and ill-treatment during portering, and the extrajudicial executions of friends and associates.
Moreover forced labour in Myanmar is a form of arbitrary detention, as civilians are forcibly taken by the military to work as unpaid labourers, and effectively detained until the army releases them from their duties.
The population of the Mon State and TanintharyiDivision, in the southeast of Myanmar, is a mixture of Mon, Karen, Tavoyan, and Merguians as well as smaller ethnic minority groups.

Their respective shares in the total marine fisheries production are as follows: inshore fishery contributed 62 339.45 mt and offshore fisheries contributed 531 767.21 mt in 2000-2001.
Tanintharyi coastal zone covers an area south of Mottama up to the mouth of Pakchan River and includes Myeik Archipelago and the Andaman Sea.
The Tanintharyi (Tenasserim border with Thailand) is productive in shoaling pelagic fishes (e.g., mackerels, sardine, tunas) and demersal fishes (e.g., snappers, nemipterids, hair tails, sharks, rays and shrimp).
The KNU is also present in the TanintharyiDivision along with small armed groups from the Mon ethnic minority.
Still others said that forced labour had decreased in their areas, particularly in some parts of the TanintharyiDivision and the Kayin State where there was very little armed opposition activity.
In spite of his family's payment, in June 2001 the militia came to his house at 9pm and told his parents that he would only be taken for a short time for questioning.
It is estimated that this area is expending at the rate of 5 Kilometres of every hundred years due to the enormous deposits of slit being carried down by these three large river systems.
The Tanintharyi coastal plain is narrow but towards the east it rises and becomes the Taninthayi Ranges with Myitmo Let Khat Peak the highest point reaching to 2073 metres.
Seagrass beds are found in the Rakhine and Tanintharyi coastal areas but not in the Ayeyarwady delta and the Gulf of Moattama.
In TanintharyiDivision, in addition to the road from Ye to Kawthaung mentioned in paragraph 420 above, there appeared to be two particular areas where road networks were being developed with forced labour: in the area of Tanintharyi town since 1994, and particularly since 1996,
In a communication addressed to the Commission TOTAL stated that it was wrong to claim that the preparatory clearing work could have been undertaken by forced labourers for the purpose of facilitating the access of the project teams.
These roads included Tanintharyi town to the Thai border at Mawtaung; Boke to Kyay Nan Daing (north of Myeik (Mergui)); from Tanintharyi town north to Ta Po Hta, as well as other roads in Tanintharyi and Thayetchaung townships.

In November the representative of UNDP in Rangoon stated that Burma is very vulnerable and that any form of external shock could lead to a human disaster.
UNICEF Field Officers have been dispatched to the three coastal areas most affected by the tsunamis in TanintharyiDivision, Ayeyarwaddy Division and Rakhine State to conduct rapid impact assessments.
Eleven blocks, M-1 to M-11, are located in the Gulf of Martaban (aka Gulf of Moattama), in the northern sector of the Andaman Sea, and seven blocks from M-12 to M-18 are by the Tanintharyi coastline, in the south, west of the Mergui Archipelago.
From 1982 to 1987, MOGE carried out seismic surveys in the Gulf of Martaban and Tanintharyi offshore areas and drilled 15 wells, with the discovery of the Yadana gas field in block M-5.
The Tanintharyi Offshore Area lies between the Mergui platform of the southwest coast and east central Andaman Sea, where the seabed steeply slopes in a westward direction, with water depths ranging up to 1000m.

Found only in Peninsular Thailand and in Burma's TanintharyiDivision, this endemic bird species was thought to be at the brink of extinction, with only 11 pairs known to occur in Thailand's dwindling lowland Sundaic forests.
The onset of the rainy season and the lack of accurate maps of the distribution of remaining lowland forests, however, made a full-scale assessment of the remaining population impossible.
Using the data from Birdlife's first preliminary survey in the TanintharyiDivision, Leimgruber and student Dan Kelly developed a GIS model to identify Burma's remaining lowland Sundaic forests and the associated Gurney's Pitta habitat.

Gurney’s Pitta rediscovered in Myanmar(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
Cambridge, UK - BirdLife International today (3rd June 2003) announced the rediscovery after 89 years of Gurney’s pitta, one of the rarest and most beautiful birds in the world, in southern Myanmar.
The discovery was made by a team of conservationists from the Bird Enthusiasts and Nature Conservation Association (BENCA), the Department of Forests Kawthaung District, TanintharyiDivision, and BirdLife International following a month-long survey of lowland forest in southern TanintharyiDivision (Tenasserim), Myanmar.
The team found pittas at four lowland forest sites, with a maximum of 10–12 pairs at one of these, all sites were close to historical collecting localities.
