Found only in Peninsular Thailand and in Burma’s Tanintharyi Division, this endemic bird species was thought to be at the brink of extinction, with only 11 pairs known to occur in Thailand’s dwindling lowland Sundaic forests.
Using the data from Birdlife’s first preliminary survey in the Tanintharyi Division, Leimgruber and Dan Kelly, a Master’s student in the GIS lab, developed a GIS model to identify Burma’s remaining lowland Sundaic forests and the associated Gurney’s Pitta habitat.

THE government last week granted a request from Thailand to allow 129 additional fishing boats to operate legally in Myanmar waters, said an official from the Department of Fisheries.
The official said permission for the entry of the Thai vessels into Myanmar waters had been given, and inspection of the tonnages and some documentation would be processed once the boats arrived Kawthoung in Tanintharyi Division.
He said foreign vessels currently fished only in Tanintharyi Division, but some of the new boats would operate in Ayeyarwaddy Division and Rakhine State.

A director of the ministry’s Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department, Dr Than Hla, said the funding support from the Paris-based organisation would be used for managing animal movements, training, public awareness campaigns and research in two districts in the division.
