The Tanks in 1914-1918   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
At Battle of Flers-Courcelette, the tanks were organised into subsections of two or three tanks, and were sent in action ahead of the infantry who could move faster.
Sadly, the tanks were next deployed in the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele); another slog through deep mud that proved a tank graveyard as machine after machine sank, stuck and was shelled.
Tanks proved to be useful in crushing wire; over-running machine gun posts and strong points; helping infantry through the streets of destroyed villages.

Allied armour of WW1; where it began
Tanks were first developed by the British as a sort of mobile pillbox that could advance forward under withering machine gun fire to crush wire and obstacles and to provide fire support for advancing infantry.
The tank, a revolutionary new weapon system, born of General Swinton's vision, was to break the stalemate of trench warfare and the dominance of the machine gun of the battlefields of Flanders sixteen years later.
The present Royal Tank Regiment, composed of two regular regiments, is the direct heir to the original armoured car pioneers of 1914, the Naval Brigade and the RNAS squadron which augmented the British Expeditionary Forces for the defence of Antwerp in August of that year.

He was constantly after his men to keep their tanks in good running condition, a difficult task greatly hampered by a shortage of spare parts and the absence of repair facilities close to the battlefield.
As the tanks were not equipped with radios, unit commanders with orders to give and messages to deliver could do so only by leaving the safety of their own vehicles and making their way on foot to the other tanks.
The tanks had plate armor, and it varied in thickness from five-eighths of an inch to one and one-half inches, depending on the vehicle and the nation that manufactured it.

 Tanks at Cambrai
In June, 1917, the name of the Heavy Branch Machine-Gun Corps had been altered to the "Tank Corps," and it was decided to increase the number of battalions from nine to eighteen; and in that month the staff of the brand new corps began to make plans for a new type of battle.
If the tanks failed, then the Tank Corps was doomed; but the bold general was confident that there would be no failure, and in those few hurried weeks before the battle he made sure of success.
One tank was pierced in the front by a shell which knocked off the driver's head, flung it on the knees of the officer sitting beside him, killed the two gunners in the right-hand sponson, and then went clean through the back without bursting.

Rules are also provided for divisional integrity, tank restrictions and breakdowns, special artillery situations, overruns (tanks and shock troops only), and basic supply.

Number of Soviet Tank and Mechanized Corps - The Dupuy Institute Forum
There are also 9 Guards Mechanized Corps, one formed from a tank corps, five from the nine in the second formations of the mechanized corps (of which four also incorporated a tank corps), and three from rifle divisions.
13th Tank Corps had been so shot up that most of its tank brigades were removed in September-October 1942, and when Mechanized Brigades were substituted at the beginning of November, it should have been redesignated as a Mechanized Corps with a new number, as had happened to other tank corps in similar situations.
I think that is due to the supposed second formations of the 6th, 7th, 16th, 17th, and 24th Tank Corps and the 4th Mechanized Corps after the originals had been retitled Guards.
