Wakan Tanka is the sum total of the personified powers that brought all things into being; sometimes it is embodied as the Six Grandfathers.
Everything has its own spirit but all share the same spiritual essence that is Wakan Tanka; so it is that the most important aspects of personality are shared by everything in the universe.
There are, for example, four divisions of time: day, night, the moon, and the year; four parts to all growing things: the roots, stem, leaves, and fruit; and four stages of human life: babyhood, childhood, adulthood, and old age.

 The Sword and the Book
In the Western chivalric tradition the sword, as the weapon of heroes, gods, and demi-gods, represents justice, might and authority, and is a symbol of the king's sovereign investiture.
This medieval motif of the 'divine sword' was revitalized by J.R. Tolkein in 'The Lord of the Rings.' In Genesis the flaming swords.of Eden guarded the gates of Paradise against mankind's defilement, whilst in The Book of Revelations the 'Son of Man' proclaims the Last Judgement with a sharp two-edged sword emerging from his mouth.
The Bodhicharyavatara states, "As the blade of the sword does not cut itself, neither does the mind know itself." As a symbol of wisdom the sword cuts through the veils of ignorance, severing the knots of illusion that bind beings to delusion and obscure the absolute truth.

 TANKA SPLENDOR 2005
One common problem I found in these tanka was that the first three lines were simply a build-up to the last two, in which the poet attempted to be clever.
Often those tanka ended with a straightforward statement that amounts to "the moral of the story." But I believe that the reader should be allowed to reach their own conclusions.
Due to ties, several tanka received 15 points, so there were 32 individual winners instead of 31 (the traditional number of sound units in Japanese) and five winners (for the five lines) from the sequences.

In old times the Lakotas believed that Wakan Tanka was everywhere all the time and observed everything that each one of mankind did and even knew what anyone thought, that he might be pleased or displeased because of something that one did.
This understanding is reflected in Lakota prayers by referring to Wakan Tanka as both grandfather and father, and to the earth, Maka, as both mother and grandmother (Joseph Epes Brown 1953: 8).
It is precisely between the states of ritual death and rebirth that a person comes closest to Wakan Tanka as this is the proper ritual framework for seeking and receiving visions, the foundation of Lakota spiritual knowledge.
