Topic: Tannat

In the News (Wed 30 Dec 09)

  Tannat - Appellation America
Tannat is a highly tannic, fl-berried grape grown in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, in the southwest corner of France.
Although its plantings in France have been declining, Tannat is widely grown in Uruguay, where it is also called 'Harriague', and is employed to make a well-liked varietal wine.
Tannat is also being explored in North America, with limited plantings in Napa Valley and in Virginia where the vine has proven successful in experimental trials.

With Tannat we have a good potential to make good fruity wine, but we lose this potential when there is an excess of tannin.
Since, with Tannat, all the polyphenols are extracted at the beginning of the fermentation, and since the fruit is extracted during this same period, it is impossible to separate out the two extractions.

More surprising perhaps, is tannat's new lease on life; this relative French unknown has been embraced by Uruguayan winemakers as their great red hope.
Prior to 1970, the rustic, tannic grape was employed as a blending component in a hearty wine named for the Madiran appellation, and it couldn't compete with the snazzier grapes in the blend: cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc.
Uruguayan Tannats are beginning to be noticed by inquisitive American and British wine consumers, but the varietal still has a way to go to catch up with Malbec or even Carmenère.
