	The BFA - Members - Tannoy
		Tannoy is one of the longest established audio companies in the world, having been in ‘the business’ for more than 75 years.
		The word Tannoy is synonymous with sound, even appearing in the dictionary as: ‘a communications system with loudspeakers, used for making announcements in public buildings.’ The phrase ‘Over the Tannoy’ is universally used to describe a PA announcement.
		Over the years, Tannoy has continued to develop its expertise in many areas where there is a requirement for high quality sound - most notably in the area of broadcast, professional recording (both audio and film sound track), and of course the company is renowned world-wide for its extensive range of hi-fi loudspeakers.

	SoundStage! Equipment Review - Tannoy Dimension TD10 Loudspeakers (8/2002)
		Tannoy says that the supertweeter corrects for phase anomalies below its effective range by moving the low-pass roll-off point of the entire speaker much higher up in frequency.
		Apparently Tannoy noticed an improvement in sound quality when the chassis of the drive unit is grounded, which they claim prevents RFI from being fed back to the amplifier.
		With the Tannoys, the depth and width of the soundstage are as they should be, but the images are coherent -- larger and more diffuse, yet less artificial at the same time.

		The benefit of Tannoy's traditional Dual-Concentric drive-unit topology is that the woofer's and tweeter's radiation patterns are much better matched through the crossover region than is usually the case with diaphragms of such different sizes.

		This is another proprietary technology, a tweeter which is designed to extend the bandwidth of the system to well in excess of 50kHz, and which is housed in a solid aluminum case bolted to the main structure of the speaker.
		Rather than using enormously thick chipboard panels to deaden the enclosure, Tannoy has taken the more intelligent route of building the carcass from birch ply, 25mm thick for the main panels apart from the baffle, which is 38mm thick.
		Tannoy hasn't rewritten the rulebook, and there is still a suggestion of quintessential Dual Concentric-like mid and upper-midband coloration in the TD12, but they have tamed it's worst manifestations.

		From the earliest days of their involvement with domestic audio, Tannoy believed that one of the great impediments to making a convincing full-range loudspeaker was the fact that different drivers, covering different portions of the audible frequency spectrum, create wavefronts that tend not to blend well: Their dispersion characteristics clash.
		Tannoy introduced their solution to those problems in 1947, when Sam Tellig was but a wee lad and the end of World War II made it possible for England to redirect her wartime technologies toward more peaceful things: a one-piece woofer and tweeter, arranged coaxially.
		Even with the Tannoys well into the room and away from the walls, the sound was more colored than that of the similarly priced Quad ESL-989 speakers, whose places they'd taken: boomy bass, and odd dips and peaks throughout much of the midrange.

		This daunting project took many days and nights of brain tearing carpentry, and the results are spectacular, producing a sound of effortless breadth and midrange/ bass detail that conventional direct radiating loudspeakers are unable to reproduce with the same characteristics.
		Having recently heard these enclosures, I have surmised that the main difference between the sound of horns and conventional direct radiator designs is not the amount of bass, or even the frequency response characteristics as a whole, but more the ability to reproduce transients as they occur in real life.
		Tannoy released a reissue of the vintage GRF Memory HE which were similar to the Yorkminster corner enclosures, but these are not the horn designs of which there were two.
