Tanoak has been a long ignored problem on the North Coast, and MRC is committed to reclaiming redwood and Douglas-fir growing ground for the health of the forest in the long term.
Addressing the tanoak component of our forest is the primary reason we use herbicides on our property (hand application of herbicide to tanoak allows planted redwood and Douglas-fir seedlings to compete with the vigorous tanoak stump sprout).
As the decomposition of the tanoak accelerates, the fine limbs and then the trunks slowly decompose which returns 100% of the biomass to the soil thus increasing soil fertility and moisture holding capacity.

Tanoak, although not a true Oak, is a member of the same botanical family and shares the same physical properties.
In the northwest, Tanoak grows among Douglas Fir in the West Coast Range and Cascade Mountains; in the southwest it is found among Coast Range Redwoods and Sierra Nevada Douglas Fir.
With sapwood that ages to a golden, reddish brown to almost identically match the heartwood, Tanoak has a straight grain like tropical hardwoods with occasional oak undertones.
