COLUMBITE - LoveToKnow Article on COLUMBITE
Tantalite is from Finland, and it has recently been found in some abundance in the deposits of cassiterite in the tin-field of Greenbushes in the Blackwood district, Western Australia.
Dimorphous with columbite and tantalite are the tetragonal minerals tapiolite (~ skogbolite) and mossite, so that the four form an isodimorphous group with the general formula (Fe, Mn) (Nb, Ta)iOs.
It is usually found associated with tantalum, the chief minerals containing these two elements being tantalite, columbite, fergusonite and yttrotantalite; it is also a constituent of pyrochlor, euxenite and samarskite.

TANTALITE (Iron Manganese Tantalum Niobium Oxide)
Tantalite is the most widespread tantalum mineral and makes for an important ore of the industrially useful metal.
Tantalum is used in alloys for strength and higher melting points, in glass to increase the index of refraction, and in surgical steel, as it is non-reactive and non-irritating to body tissues.
Tantalite's greatest difference from columbite is its much greater specific gravity, 8.0+ compared to columbite's 5.2.

Many companies entered the tantalite market during the 18 months that saw the metal - famed for its 2996 °C melting point and its high corrosion resistance - reach staggering $350/lb highs, she notes.
While the tantalite producer may have been prevented from attaining enormous profits, it was also shielded from downswings in the commodity.
This is as a result of owner's over-eagerness to sell assets at the metal's boom price, as well as the difficulty of defining tantalite reserves and resources, which are often not as evenly distributed as other metals, such as gold, she says.

Tantalite concentrates are processed to produce tantalum metal and other tantalum products and about half of tantalum consumption is used in the manufacture of electronic capacitors.
Tantalite is a tantalite of iron and manganese and is nearly always associated with columbite, a niobate of iron and manganese.
The ratio of tantalite to columbite varies greatly in different deposits and ranges from nearly pure tantalite to nearly pure columbite.

 Coltan
Mineral concentrates containing tantalum are usually referred to as 'tantalite'.
Tantalite is the mineral or ore, and tantalum is the metallic element which can be extracted (or refined) from the ore. 'Coltan' from central Africa is only a minor source of tantalum.
The main supply of the world's tantalum comes from Australia, where the largest producer operates two mines, and tantalum minerals are also mined in Canada, Brazil, China and Africa.

Mozambique President Joaquim Chissano has officially opened a tantalite mine, reputedly the third biggest in the world, in the country's central province of Zambezia.
Tantalite is a valuable mineral used in the manufacture of cellular phones, automobiles and paint.
The mine, which was first developed by a group of Israeli investors, was abandoned at the height of the country's 16-year civil war, which ended in 1992.

The drilling primarily tested the North and South Aubry zones, where 2001 exploration discovered tantalum (tantalite), lithium (spodumene) and beryllium (beryl) mineralization in granitic pegmatites over a 1 km plus strike length.
Significant coarse tantalite was noted in SL-02-15 and SL-02-28 on the North Aubry zone.
The nugget affect generated by the presence or absence of coarse tantalite crystals, similar to that generated by visible gold particles in a gold zone, makes it likely that the overall grade of the zone is underestimated by the drill core assay results.

Geological mapping this season has noted coarse tantalite crystals scattered through the pegmatites in all of the six trenches which, in most cases, were not sampled by channel sampling.
The coarse tantalite creates a nugget effect, similar to visible gold mineralization in a gold zone.
This nugget effect tends to underestimate the actual tantalum values of the zone unless the tantalite crystals are sampled in the cut channels.

The source of these deposits was thought to be pegmatites associated with contacts between intrusive basic bodies and granitic country rock, but this was never confirmed.
This project was designed to attempt to establish the source of the columbite / tantalite, better define the extent of the deposits and also explore for other elements of commercial value.
Results show columbite / tantalite occurrences with associated high rare earth, base metal, Mn, U and W concentrations are related to pegmatites in granites in an oval 10km wide area, broadly ringed by basaltic to doleritic intrusions.
