Tantojutsu is the Japanese martial art of knife fighting that features the use of a knife known as a tanto.
Tantojutsu is effectively similar to a swordfight, except that knives are much shorter than swords, requiring the combatants to engage at much closer quarters.
As in Kenjutsu, Tantojutsu and Aikijutsu are two sides of the same coin.

 Tantojutsu
The tanto waza directly impact many of the empty hand techniques used in jujutsu and aikijujutsu--if fact tantojutsu is frequently an included or required weapon in many jujutsu and aikijujutsu ryuha.
While Tantojutsu (art of the dagger) is not widely practiced today, the weapon is sometimes used in kata demonstrations and tameshigiri.
Tanto were forged in the same manner and to the same standard as the Nippon-to, see the figure below for an example of this craftsmanship (this O-tanto is from the author's collection).

We do not compete in tournaments, but practice the skills necessary to deal with real-life confrontations of all kinds.
In addition to studying various types of unarmed movement (taijutsu), we also study how to use many different types of weapons, including sword (kenjutsu), knife (tantojutsu), sticks of various sizes (bojutsu), and others.
The only way to develop the ability to move freely in an encounter, whether you have a weapon or not, is by repeatedly practicing basic movements.

It should be understood that Iaijutsu, as taught within our lineage of Seito Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu, does not stand in isolation from Kenjutsu, but is rather a component of a broad range of sword methods (kenpo) generally collectively refered to as Kenjutsu.
The lineage of Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu practised and taught within the Jikishin-Kai may be thought of as a Sogo Budo which includes extensive training in Iaijutsu and Kenjutsu, as well as Suemonogiri (practise target cutting), Kodachijutsu, tantojutsu and jujutsu.
Kenjutsu methods are introduced quite early in one's training initially in the form of the basic katachi (paired kata) known as Tachiuchi No Kurai, and then progresses to advanced sets of katachi as well as the paired practise of waza bunkai and oyo.

 The Yawara Stick
According to the excellent website, Yawara.Com, Frank Matsuyama originally wanted to teach Tantojutsu to Police Officers, use of edged weapons, in case their service weapon was lost in a struggle so that the Officer could instantly transition to another weapon and continue fighting.
In one picture, you see a striking technique that would be more effective with a fljack than a Yawara Stick, where the hand is on one end of the stick instead of in the center as with Yawara Stick techniques.
There is also another hint of Japanese Tantojutsu as the end of The Linck Stick is grounded into the palm and secured in place there by finger placement -- for thrusting.

Ancient martial arts in Japan were eventually classified into eighteen different branches, referred to as the Bugei Ju-Happan.
Basically, these categories consisted of archery (kyujutsu), artillery (hojutsu), dagger (tantojutsu), halberd (naginatajutsu), hook (mojirijutsu), horsemanship (bajutsu), javelin (sojutsu), knife throwing (shurikenjutsu), needle (ganshinjutsu), restraining (toritejutsu), chain and sickle (kusarigamajutsu), staff (bojutsu), stealth (shinobijutsu) swimming (suijutsu), swordsmanship (kenjutsu), sword-drawing (battojutsu), truncheon (jutte-jutsu), and unarmed self-defense (jujutsu).
