	Tantulocarida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Tantulocarida is a small subclass of the class Maxillopoda (ostracods, copepods, barnacles) that consists of about 1200 species.
		Members of this subclass are minute - less than 0.01 inch (0.3 mm) in length - and have a dramatic reduction in body form compared to other crustaceans, with an unsegmented sac-like thorax and a much reduced abdomen.

	Taxonomy
		It can be argued that Maxillopoda should actually be dissolved into its four subclasses, Copepoda, Thecostraca, Tantulocarida and Mystacocarida, to make nine classes of crustaceans, but it is generally kept as a whole.
		It is then broken down slightly differently, changing the number of orders to 42 and families to 849.
		It is further divided into six subclasses: Thecostraca (including Cirripedia, formerly separated), Tantulocarida, Branchiura, Pentastomida, Mystacocarida, and Copepoda.

		ABSTRACT: Two species of Tantulocarida (Crustacea, Maxillopoda) belonging to the families Microdajidae and Basipodellidae and parasitisiting on copepods and tanaidaceans were found at the Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea.
		This is the first report of Tantulocarida for the White Sea, as well as other Russian sea.

		This possibly monophyletic group is considered as the sister-group of the "thecostracan lineage" (not formally named yet), embracing Bredocaris admirabilis (see below), Tantulocarida, Ascothoracida, Facetotecta and Cirripedia (see also Walossek and Müller 1998).
		Skaracarida were found only in the lowermost Zone 1, the Agnostus-pisiformis zone of the Upper Cambrian Alum-shale sequence, and no larval stages were recognized of the two species differentiated in 1985.
		Possibly these two species were vertically stratified in their occurrence in the flocculent bottom zone, since they co-occur in the samples.
