Tanygrisiau Reservoir   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Vastly inconvenient though it was for the Ffestiniog Railway, the Tanygrisiau Reservoir formed part of a fascinating concept in national electric power management.
During slack periods in power usage, water is pumped from Tanygrisiau through underground pipes uphill to a higher reservoir at Llyn Stwlan.
When demand spikes, the water from Stwlan is flows back down through the pipes and turns turbines connected to generators, which in turn generate electricity to be fed back into the national grid.

In 1970 an alternative route to the west of the Tanygrisiau reservoir was agreed and the Dduallt spiral to raise the line was completed in 1971.
On 24 June 1978 the opening of the deviation between Dduallt and Tanygrisiau was celebrated with speeches, a party and a 'golden spike' ceremony.
The rock face just beyond Tanygrisiau was unstable and a serious rock fall demanded costly remedial action when money was tighter than ever.

With 'Blanche' to come out of service for overhaul in the not too distant future there may not be many more opportunities to see and hear the two Ladies working together.
Trains returning from Blaenau Ffestinog have only one short uphill gradient to surmount, this is at Tanygrisiau where the line leaves it's original course to deviate around the lake and eventually reach Dduallt via the spiral.
The two ladies, 'Blanche' and 'Linda' are heard departing from Tanygrisiau station where they had paused briefly to pick up before tackling the remaining rising gradient to the summit close to the power station.

Beyond Tanygrisiau, however, Iarll Meirionnydd began working hard as we swerved onto the Deviation line around the reservoir.
Though no doubt a great sorrow to the ghost of Charles Spooner, the redundant grade was a joy to me: I had one good chance to watch the Iarll tackle a real grade.
A brief test of the Fairlie's mettle, but enough to underscore just why the big, four-drivered articulateds had been such favorites with Ffestiniog mangers and crews for over a century.

On the morning of Sunday 13th October 2002 all the available slate wagons were combined into one train and these were taken up to the summit just before Tanygrisiau by Single Fairlie 'Taliesin' and the other England loco 'Palmerston'.
Originally the railway was built to have a falling gradient throughout so that trains could be gravity worked all the way from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour at Porthmadog.
However, the building of a new route to deviate around that part of the original route flooded by the CEGB reservoir at Tanygrisiau has resulted in a short uphill gradient in the otherwise downhill run back from Blaenau Ffestiniog at that point.

In the early 1950s a group of volunteers purchased the company to run it as a tourist attraction, and gradually restored the line to working order.
This was not helped by a decision by the electricity authority in the mid 1950s, to build a dam, and thereby create the Tanygrisiau reservoir, which flooded part of the northern end of the line.
In the 1970s a new diversion route including a rail spiral and a tunnel was built around the reservoir by volunteer labour, the through route to Blaenau Ffestiniog was completed in 1982.
