The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) is a state-owned enterprise that runs a railway net that once was part of the East African Railways Corporation (EARC) operating in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika.
TRC's gauge is 1.000m and the total length is about 2,600 km.
Two east-west lines from the coast to the hinterland were initiated when the country was under colonial rule as German East Africa.

MSAGALI, Tanzania (AP) — Rescuers searching for survivors used a crane to try and break through the mangled wreckage Tuesday of a train crash in central Tanzania while soldiers wearing surgical gloves or socks on their hands worked at removing the dead.
Tanzania's passenger trains are notoriously overcrowded and there were more than 1,200 people on board, including some cars with 80 people inside.
Sudi said Railway officials were still unsure what caused the accident but had begun an investigation.

 Tanzania's worst ever rail crash
Some 281 people died on June 24 when a passenger train crashed while travelling across Tanzania, from Dar Es Salaam on the coast to Mwanza on the southern shore of Lake Victoria.
The disaster occurred only a month after 192 people were killed in a train crash in neighbouring Mozambique in almost identical circumstances, when a train whose brakes had failed ran back down a hill into cement wagons.
It is the worst accident in the history of the Tanzania Railways Corporation.
