Taoism and the Tao te Ching, (tao te ching taoism.com)
Tao is the union of Heaven and Earth, of distance and intimacy, of emptiness and form, mind and feeling, object and subject, spirit and flesh.
Tao can be roughly stated to be the flow of the universe, or the force behind the natural order.[11] Tao is believed to be the influence that keeps the universe balanced and ordered.
Tao is associated with nature, due to a belief that nature demonstrates the Tao.[12] The flow of qi, as the essential energy of action and existence, is compared to the universal order of Tao.

Tao is the core topic of the book, supplemented by related themes such as Te ("virtue", or "power"), nothingness, return, detachment, and wu-wei ("non-action").
The Tao Te Ching can be seen as advocating mostly "feminine" (or Yin) values, emphasising the qualities of water — fluidity and softness (instead of the solid and stable mountain), choosing the obscure and mysterious aspect of things, and controlling things without ruling them, in other words to 'have without possessing'.
The Tao Te Ching is written in classical Chinese, which is in itself difficult even for normally educated modern native speakers of Chinese to understand completely.

 Tao_Te_Ching
The Tao Te Ching has been translated almost as many times as the Bible (second behind the Bible in fact).
The Tao Te Ching does not specifically define what the Tao is. Laozi himself reportedly said, "My words are very easy to understand [...] yet no one under heaven understands them." (chapter 70) Tao in this opening refers to the Absolute, the First Cause or the resultant Singularity (Chapter 39, 42).
This passage can be better understood when read with Chapter 42 in which the divisions from Tao into unity, duality and tripartite, and the yin yang complemental attributes as the crux of all creation, is an alternative take on Genesis in the Old Testament.

Lao Tzu: The Tao Te Ching (incomplete)
Recent philological studies are more inclined to suggest that Tao Te Ching is written perhaps rather in the 4th or the 3rd century B.C. (later than Confucius) and is maybe not written by one author, but from many different origins including certain proverbs which were very likely prevalent around the time.
Tao Te Ching has a clear stylistic unity (in terms of the use of Chinese characters) and the only one use of the proper noun (the reference to Yang Tze River).
A little later than when Tao Te Ching was written, the China was unified and many different dialects (particularly of different Chinese characters for the same sound) came to known to each other.

EAWC Essay: Reflections on the Tao Te Ching
What the poet/sage Lao Tzu refers us to is an older time when men were wiser, when the depths of the earth and the nature of life were better understood and acted upon, when complications that separate us from the way of truth had not been put in place personally or politically.
The Tao Te Ching, assumes that there is an evident reality and pattern in the physical universe that is the manifestation of the truth of its being and, further, that human nature is part of this and can live fully and joyfully in it by conscious participation in what the universe reveals to us.
While the Tao Te Ching acknowledges the need for an ideal world, one uncomplicated by competition, weapons, and wars, it allows us to live in a world fallen from that ideal and still conform to the deeper truth in our own souls.
