Tap dance is not a sport, but a CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC TRADITION that started as music played by African slaves in the Southern United States and evolved into a complex, sophisticated artistic medium that now stands at the crossroads of dance and music.
Instead, they range from, at the very minimum, professional tap dance teachers who have been certified by the American Tap Dance Institute to professional artists who are at the very top of the field and are widely known for their accomplishments, such as members of the National Tap Ensemble cast or NTE guest artists.

Tap was brought onto film but it was heavily choreographed and the technique of adding the taps after the dance was filmed removed the "what you see is what you hear" aspect.
In the 1950's Tap lost is popularity, due to many reasons some of which were the changing style of music and the trend towards classical balletic dances in films.

The Time Step is a repetitive tap combination which was initially used as a means by which a tap dancer could communicate to his band, what type of tempo was required, as dancers all preferred different tempo's or music speeds according to their ability.
Before the emergence of many of the main innovators, tap dancers used to begin all of there routines by beginning with a time step which was then followed by a routine or improvisation.
