  New tapaculos from Colombia
Unidentified tapaculos have been observed in the northern Cordillera Central for a decade, and when Niels Krabbe examined recordings of their songs, his suspicions arose that they were a new species.
Its discovery is similar to Stiles’s Tapaculo, since the presence of an unknown tapaculo in the Finca Merenberg mountains of the southern Cordillera Central has been known since the 1980s.
Tapaculos are generally dark coloured and skulk in thick forest undergrowth, making them notoriously difficult to study in the field.

Tapaculo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tapaculos are a group of small suboscine passeriform birds with numerous species, found in South America.
They are usually placed in a distinct family Rhinocryptidae; more recent research (Rice, 2005) indicates that they might be better merged into the Formicariidae as tribe Rhinocryptini, as they are closer to the antthrushes than either is to the formicariid antpittas.
The tail is cocked and pointed towards the head, and the name tapaculo derives from the Spanish for "cover your behind".

Shy Cloud Forest Birds Identified as New Species
Unidentified tapaculos have been observed in the northern Cordillera Central for a decade, but it took an expert at bird identification who examined recordings of their songs to identify the new species.
The species Stiles’s tapaculo is found throughout a 300 kilometer (200 mile) stretch of the Cordillera Central where it occupies cloud forests between 1,420 and 2,130 meters (4,650 and 6,988 feet) in altitude.
Currently the Upper Magdalena tapaculo is known from two localities on the east slope of the Cordillera Central at 2,000—2,300 meter elevation.

The classification of a newly discovered plant or animal species is a leisurely affair, involving much scolarly research and a formal peer reviewed description, with figures published in a proper scientific journal, before the public at large is informed.
The wet tall-grass tapaculo, clearly a member of the genus SCYTALOPUS, is found in only three areas, amounting to less than 10 hectares.
At one time, the marshes of the region and the habitat of the then-unknown species of tapaculo were much more extensive.

The Tapaculos are a family of eight small passerine bird species found in South America.

The Tapaculos are the mice of the avian world.
Among these are Huet-huets, Turcas, and Gallitos of Chile and Argentina but the "tapaculo of tapaculos" must be the Ocellated Tapaculo (left) of montane bamboo patches in the high Andes.
Recent biochemical evidence (summarized in Sibley and Ahlquist (990) indicates that the tapaculos are a distinct family whose closest relatives are the gnateaters (Conopophagidae) and the ground antbirds (Formicariidae).

Stiles's Tapaculo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stiles's Tapaculo (Scytalopus stilesi) is a member of the tapaculo family, Rhinocryptidae, described as new to science in 2005.
It has been found at 21 sites in montane forest between 1,420 and 2,130 m altitude in the northern Cordillera Central of the Colombian Andes; although having a restricted range, within this limited area it is a common understorey bird.
The species was originally observed in the 1990s, but when Niels Krabbe examined recordings of their songs, his suspicions arose that they were a new species — Stiles's Tapaculo's song is considerably faster and lower-pitched than that of the closely related Ecuadorian Tapaculo S.
