Tapawera resident Philip Cropp said there were three outages that he knew of, where residents could dial within the exchange but not out, and could not call emergency service numbers.
Telecom repaired the equipment, and had started further work between Tapawera and Nelson to provide an alternative route for phone traffic in the event of a failure, she said.

Noel is the oldest son of Tom and Ann Gallot, born on the 29th of December 1964.
Noel was brought up in Golden Downs and later Tapawera, and became a bushman for the NZ Forest Service after leaving Tapawera Area School at age 16.
Noel and Bonnie purchased a small area of farm land near Tapawera in late 1994, where they still live, and in December 1999 Shaun William Gallot was born.

Tapawera residents with poor telephone connections are set to benefit from Telecom's latest upgrade.
Telecom media relations executive Melanie Marshall said the company was halfway through replacing copper wire with fibre optic cable in Tapawera, which would improve voice quality and boost usage capacity in the area.
The replacement would mean Tapawera residents would no longer hear "crackling'' during phone conversations and Internet use would be faster as fewer disconnections occur with fibre optics, she said.

Start with twelve people needing to get back to Christchurch and one to Timaru, add only two immediately available cars, (one of which having such limited ground clearance that two of its passengers were ejected 1 km down the road), and two more vehicles 1.5 hours away at the Lake Bulmer track end.
This time Bernard's logistical skills were not so effective because he had not added into the equation the backing of his car into a ditch on the way out to Tapawera, so 5 stranded trampers at Courthouse flat got tired of lunching, drying gear, being eaten by sandflies and started walking out.
In time, Kieran and John Shrewsbury returned to Tapawera to pick us up and after a little more waiting we were all on our way to Christchurch.

All of the local shooting clubs, the Riwaka, Tapawera, Waimea and Nelson clubs, had experienced such reductions in their numbers and equipment that they combined to become the Nelson Waimea Gun Club.
The Nelson Speedway Club moved in beside the gun club at a later stage, but the gun club was forced to again look further afield when difficulties arose with a combination of the continuing need to replace the Speedway's floodlight bulbs and the residential growth in the area.
In 1985 funds were raised and the Club moved to its current situation on the old football fields in the Golden Downs forest in Tapawera.
