Disk operating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And in the early days of microcomputers, paper tape or audio cassette tape (see Kansas City standard) or nothing were used instead.
In microcomputers, SWTPC's 6800 and 6809 machines used TSC's FLEX disk operating system, Radio Shack's TRS-80 machines used TRS-DOS, their Color Computer used OS-9, and most of the Intel 8080 based machines from IMSAI, MITS (makers of the legendary Altair 8800), Cromemco, North Star, etc used the CP/M-80 disk operating system.
PC-DOS/MS-DOS (and CP/M) The best known family of operating systems named "DOS" is that running on IBM PCs type hardware using the Intel CPUs or their compatible cousins from other makers.

The operating system resides in 4K bytes of EPROM at a high memory address.
The system may be used with or without the tape cassette facility.
Use of this system reffuires at least 4K bytes of random access memory (RAM 4A-4), and requires use of a PROM 4-4 board.

Operating System Overview   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
The Digital UNIX operating system uses a unified buffer cache (UBC) to hold the actual file data, which includes reads and writes from conventional file activity and page faults from mapped file sections.
The file system architecture for the Digital UNIX operating system is based on the OSF/1 Virtual File System (VFS), which is based on Berkeley 4.3 Reno VFS.
It does not support all UNIX file system operations, cannot obtain access to remote devices (that is, files and file systems can be operated on, but not the physical devices on which they reside), and does not guarantee atomic operations.

Essentially, the job of the operating system is to provide for an orderly and controlled allocation of the processors, memories, and input/output devices among the various programs competing for them.
The operating system manages the computer system’s hardware, the process itself, the data and the communications with the operator, user or outside world, in accordance with the policy set by the individual or organization controlling the computer system.
The first operating system was developed in the mid-1950s by General Motors Corporation (GM) for an IBM 701.

Components of a Network Operating System
Though the idea of using a pure message-passing operating system to improve this situation is not a new one, in the environment of a mature, high speed, local area network it is an idea whose time has come.
The interface between a process running under an operating system and the world outside its memory space is the "system call", a request for service from the operating system.
If the term "Network Operating System" is taken to refer to a collection of cooperating computer systems working together to provide services by multiplexing the hardware resources available on a network, then the title "Components of a Network Operating System" suggests a discussion of the "Component" systems.

Operating System/360 (OS/360) is a large, comprehensive real-time operating system developed for the IBM System/360 family of mainframe computers in the mid-1960s.
Utilities bundled into the operating system included a sort/merge (qv) routine, a debugger, Linkage Editors for combining modules into full programs, and a Remote Job Entry system for remote submission of jobs through a communications terminal.
This put the system at a disadvantage against the MCP (Master Control Program) offered by Burroughs which offered all of these facilities.

 DigiBarn Systems: Digital Group System
This system used a Z80 processor and a proprietary bus from The Digital Group, Inc. and came complete with dual cassette tape drives supporting a hierarchical directory structure, "Real World Interface" system which was housed in a separate box with about 8 different adapters such as A/D, D/A converters and a printer.
These systems had a simple tape operating system (I don't remember much about it), digital cassette drives (1 to 4) and a 32 char by 16 line display.
These later systems (around 1978 and 1979) had a 64X16 display, Oasis disk operating system, 8 inch floppies and a very large number of peripherals and other options.

 history of operating system
The solution to this problem was to have programmers prepare their work off-line on some input medium (often on punched cards, paper tape, or magnetic tape) and then hand the work to a computer operator.
The first operating system to introduce system calls was University of Machester’s Atlas I Supervisor.
A few newly hired engineers were unable to get valuable mainframe computer time because of lack of seniority and resorted to writing their own operating system (UNIX) and programming language (C) to run on an unused mainframe computer still in the original box (the manufacturer had gone out of business before shipping an operating system).

A major breakdown in Southern California's air traffic control system last week was partly due to a "design anomaly" in the way Microsoft Windows servers were integrated into the system, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
The radio system shutdown, which lasted more than three hours, left 800 planes in the air without contact to air traffic control, and led to at least five cases where planes came too close to one another, according to comments by the Federal Aviation Administration reported in the LA Times and The New York Times.
The contract for designing the system, called Voice Switching and Control System (VSCS), was awarded to Harris Corporation in 1992 and the system was installed in the late 1990s, initially using Unix servers, according to Harris.

While some operating systems, like the love-hate Unix, have been around since the early days of digital computing (read 1960's), most have appeared in the late 70's to the present time, varying from powerful multiuser OS's to little OS's that ran on 8 bit computers in under 64K of memory.
Its operating system was BASIC, but had a built-in ML monitor and could generate a fl-and-white TV display with its 4K of RAM (max 8K).
OS9 was an operating system that was one of the few, if not the only, multitasking, multithreading, and, if you're lucky, multi-user operating systems extant for an 8-bit system.

Mac OS X Core Audio integrates a range of audio functionality directly into the operating system in ways never before possible, enabling unprecedented performance and ease of use in your virtual studio.
The most fundamental measure of audio performance is throughput latency — the time it takes for audio to enter your Mac, travel through the system to your application and then pass back out to your monitoring system (speakers).
This architecture enables such applications as home theater surround sound, professional composition and scoring and large-scale professional tape transfer in a single pass, with greatly improved performance.
