Tape recorder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In general, a tape recorder, tape deck, cassette deck or tape machine is any device that records and plays back, fluctuating signal by moving a strip of magnetic tape across a tape head.
Current flowing in the coils of the electromagnet causes the magnetic material on the tape to align in a manner proportional to the original signal.
Video cassette recorders differ substantially from audio recorders because of the use of a rotating magnetic head that uses a helical scan of the tape medium.

tape recorder. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
In audio recorders, the sound to be recorded is picked up by a device such as a microphone, and transformed into an electric current.
The current is fed to a transducer in the recording head of the tape recorder, which converts it into corresponding magnetic flux variations that magnetize the particles on the tape.
Tape recorders always require that the recording media and the recording or playback tape heads move with respect to each other.

 Analog Tape
Tape echo is developed by the distance between the record and play heads on a tape deck.
Since the tape has a certain amount of noise built in, the basic quandry is to get the signal as hot as possible (to be louder than the noise) but not distorted due to tape saturation.
This distance between the bars depends on the frequency and tape speed, and is in fact the wavelength of the signal on the tape.

Poynter Online - To Tape or Not to Tape
Whether or not a tape recorder is superior to note-taking by hand is one of the enduring newsroom debates.
On May 6, 1937, Herb Morrison, a reporter for a Chicago radio station, was in a New Jersey field recording the arrival of the German dirigible Hindenburg, using a primitive machine that recorded voices on a wire coated with a magnetic substance.
Of course, reporters who don't want to use a tape recorder don't have to, although they often feel compelled to justify why using a machine for an interview is a bad idea.
