Tape Storage and Offsite Media Rotations, Archive America, Providing all you Computer Backup needs Los Angeles ...
At Archive America we have slowly seen the increase in demand for Tape Storage and the full management of tape media and tape storage, this is without doubt due to the increases in the corporate world’s reliance on large computer networks and the need to keep regular backup tapes stored offsite.
This is general achieved by requesting from offsite tape storage and media backup’s that can be restored to ensure that the organization can be up and running as soon as possible.
Our trained Records Center team members are fully aware of the importance of tape and media storage and offsite tape storage and treat each situation with the care and importance it deserves.

Magnetic tape - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magnetic tape was first invented by Fritz Pfleumer in 1928 in Germany, based on the invention of the magnetic wire by Valdemar Poulsen in 1898.
Tape has quite a long data latency for random accesses since the deck must wind an average of 1/3 the tape length to move from one arbitrary data block to another.
Most tape systems attempt to alleviate the intrinsic long latency using either indexing, whereby a separate lookup table is maintained which gives the physical tape location for a given data block number, or marking, whereby a tape mark that can be detected while winding the tape at high speed is written to the tape.

Magnetic tape - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magnetic tape is a non-volatile storage medium consisting of a magnetisable coating on a thin plastic strip.
Early IBM tape drives were mechanically sophisticated floor-standing drives that used vacuum columns to buffer long u-shaped loops of tape.
A tape drive (or "transport" or "deck") uses precisely-controlled motors to wind the tape from one reel to the other, passing a read/write head as it does.

Invented in the 1950s, tape storage systems "historically have not been as reliable as people would like, and they haven't had the performance that people would like so [tape vendors] are trying to upgrade," Hill says.
In the same way that disk storage recently underwent a revolution, a wave of recent upgrades to tape storage technology and the development of a new interoperability standard, LTO (Linear Tape Open), has opened the lines of communication among tape vendors in an effort to provide heterogeneous operation and backward-compatibility across proprietary tape storage platforms.
Tape storage media have been used in isolated "islands" during the past 50 years due to what Brenda Zawatski, vice president of removable media solutions at IBM's Storage Systems Division, sees as a lack of cohesive industry vision for tape storage and the unglamorous perception of tape as being an archaic solution.

storage.itworld.com - IBM researchers eye 100T-byte tape drive
Magnetic particles painted on today's tapes are about one micron -- one millionth of a meter -- in size, but in order to create data tracks that are smaller than one micron, new manufacturing processes will have to be developed.
Essentially, IBM researchers plan to change the magnetic patterns on tape media from something that is large and uncontrolled to something much smaller and tightly controlled, Narayan said, meaning the tape of the future will have much smaller magnetic particles that are densely packed into rows, somewhat like dimples on a golf ball.
Sales of tape drives are expected to decline slightly over the next few years, dropping from $2 billion in sales this year, to $1.9 billion by 2008, according to IDC.

Tape storage still the best backup solution
TAPE STORAGE still plays a significant role as a backup tool in network data storage even as disk prices are falling because new tape storage products from vendors such as Advanced Digital Information Corp. (ADIC), as well as improved tape formats such as Super DLT (digital linear tape), move tape storage technology forward.
Tape storage can cost as little as several hundredths of a cent per megabyte, compared with 2 cents to 3 cents per megabyte for disk storage, industry experts said.
But cheap disk storage now allows companies to mirror data to a disk-based staging area, where data is then moved to tape without the stress of a looming backup window, said Tony Prigmore, a senior analyst at The Enterprise Storage Group in Milford, Mass.
