  Tapeheads review (1988) - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
TAPEHEADS is a cult comedy, and by the very essence of the term, it is a film loved by a small percentage of people while the remainder of the mainstream film viewers scratch their heads in bewilderment as to why.
Among their many projects, one brings them just a tad too much trouble, when they are given a videotape of a leading presidential candidate caught doing some perverse sexual acts, and the boys have to watch their back while also trying to make a living in the music video industry.
TAPEHEADS is a pure joy to watch, a funny, irreverent comedy that evokes laughs just by the sheer absurdity of the situations.

 DVD Verdict Review - Tapeheads
The Shawshank Redemption), Tapeheads was a tank at the box office (due to little publicity and a small theatrical run) and a sought after gem on video.
Tapeheads is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic and is, unbelievably, excellent.
Tapeheads is fun for those of you with an off-kilter sense of humor and if you enjoy watching grown men in women's clothing.

Review - Tapeheads (1988)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Starring John Cusack (Ivan) and Tim Robbins (Josh), “Tapeheads” is a slight cult comedy that satires the 80s music video revolution.
Dreams never come easy though and the pair have to take their fair share of chaff assignments--including producing a TV ad for a local Fried Chicken and Waffle franchise and music video for an awful Swedish rock band--before hitting the big-time.
A simple dubbing mistake on one of their videos does eventually land them in the limelight, though, and affords them the power to achieve their dream of helping the world rediscover forgotten soul duo “The Swanky Modes.” “Tapeheads” does run a little hot and cold humor-wise, bouncing between the sophomoric and smartly satirical without warning.

Tapeheads stars John Cusack and Tim Robbins as Ivan Alexeev and Josh Tager, two aimless young men biding their time as security guards.
The appeal of Tapeheads may be limited, but it has definite cult potential—those who appreciate it are likely to find themselves watching it over and over, memorizing and quoting.
Tapeheads is a quirky comedy that captures a certain period in American pop culture with exaggerated, intelligent style.

Mutant Reviewers from Hell do "Tapeheads"
Tapeheads is the age old tale of two best friends who get fired from their crappy jobs and with nothing to lose try to make it big as video directors.
Tapeheads is the only movie I know about wherein John Cusack has a love scene with R rated nudity in it (read "boobies").
If you know of some OTHER movie with John Cusack and nudity (and he's involved) I'll love you forever if you tell me what it is (because I'm filthy and disgusting).

Tapeheads (1988) - A Review by David Nusair   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Though it's since developed quite a loyal cult following, Tapeheads is nonethless a silly, occasionally quite funny little comedy anchored by two typically excellent performances by Tim Robbins and John Cusack.
They're forced to take random odd jobs (commercials for chicken joints, video wills, etc.) until their big break comes in the form of a '50s soul group called The Swanky Modes.
It's because those various tunes are so good (and so original), that the rest of the movie sort of pales in comparison.

Tapeheads is a little-known gem that I have treasured for some time now.
Tapeheads tells the story of two guys looking to make it big in music videos who inadvertantly, and unwittingly get mixed up a greater scandal involving a pornographic video starring a presidential canidate.
Made in 1988, Tapeheads seems to mock the excess of the 80s by being extremely excessive.

In the 80's, back when MTV actually played videos, I spent plenty of time with it on in the background, the way radio was in earlier decades.
Tapeheads captures that in spades - the glitzy, superficial, just plain stupid, yet weirdly captivating 80's music video scene, from behind.
With spoof videos like King Cotton in the "Roscoe's Chicken and Waffle Commercial", and Devo backing Cube-Squared's video ("The hottest thing from Sweden since Abba") in mock-Swedish, and some stunningly good performances by "The Swanky Modes" (Sam Moore and Junior Walker), it sticks in your head.

Like The Blues Brothers, Tapeheads throws in a lot of musical numbers into the mix – to surprisingly enjoyable results.
You also get a CD single containing Ordinary Man by The Swanky Modes.
Conclusion: Tapeheads is semi-enjoyable, but entirely worth checking out if only for the performances by Cusack and Robbins.
