Taphonomy is the study of what happens to an organism after its death and until its discovery as a fossil.
The field of Taphonomy as it relates to steps in transformation from living organisms to fossils.
Processes that occur between the death of an organism and its subsequent burial in the sediment are termed biostratinomy.

taphonomy -- The study of what happens to a fossil, from the time of its initial creation (e.g.
For example, shells or bones can be moved my running water, and later be compressed by overlying sediment.
Taphonomy is often broken into two parts, biostratinomy and the study of diagenesis.

 Taphonomy of artefacts
The framework of taphonomy is discussed and it is claimed that the taphonomic processes which act upon bone can equally modify stone, and that the main objectives of taphonomic studies in palaeontology can be achieved in the study of prehistoric artefacts.
In many palaeontological studies taphonomy "...involves 'working back' from the fossil assemblage to the composition, structure and dynamics of the parent populations..." (Olson 1980).
In an attempt to demonstrate this, three mechanisms are described in this paper: trampling of artefacts lying on the ground surface, cooking of artefacts lying just below the ground surface, and in situ weathering and decay of artefacts in a deposit.

TAPHONOMY: A TOOL FOR STUDYING EARTH'S BIBLICAL HISTORY
As a creationist study it should involve the careful examination of the physical evidence around a fossil to determine the cause of its death, the nature of the interval between death and the fossilization of the remaining record of a life-form and the environment which produced its fossilization.
I am fascinated by the open door which the study of taphonomy provides for me to step back through its doorway into some of the obscure but all important events which shaped and modified earth's early centuries and the life-forms which were placed on it by the Creator.
Since taphonomy focuses on the interval that includes the death, burial and ultimate preservation of that life-form in fossilization, it can give us valuable information concerning the kind of a life a creature lived before death as we study the matrix in which the fossil is found.

The Centro de Estudios de Almejas Muertas (C.E.A.M.) [English translation: Center for the Study of Dead Clams] is an informal organization dedicated to the study of taphonomy.
Taphonomy is the study of dead things and how they get incorporated into the fossil record.
C.E.A.M. is based at the Department of Geosciences, University of Arizona and its members are united by their interest in dead things - clams, insects, brachiopods, vertebrates, plants, etc. Karl Flessa is "El Jefe" and his CV can be found here.

 International Plant Taphonomy Meeting
The purpose of the International Plant Taphonomy Meetings is to stimulate scientific research and to promote contacts among scientists engaged in the study of plant taphonomy including living and fossil plants of all geological periods.
Because they are sedentary, plants can only survive in those places where the climate is suitable.
So if you are interested in taphonomy and plant taphonomy in particular, why not come to our next reunion.
