In contrast, Tapiola is one of Sibelius's most original and ingenious masterpieces, and one of the most remarkable compositions of the 20th century.
Tapiola was completed at Ainola at the end of August 1926, but in September Sibelius sent a telegram to the publishing house Breitkopf and Härtel, asking to get the score back for corrections.
According to him Tapiola contained the scent of the marshes, the flight of an eagle, strange creatures and the rich poetry of the woodlands.

The thirty-four-year span from Kullervo to Tapiola is brief in the life of a man who lived into his ninety-second year, but he had not been a precocious beginner and he was just past sixty when, to the dismay of those who loved his music, he wrapped himself in silence.
There is a parallel between the idea of a tonality which is not obvious yet whose presence is none the less keenly felt to be hovering in the background, and the mysterious presence of Tapio in the forest.
To be sure, Tapiola’s first sound is a B (a quadruple rap on a kettledrum), but the first phrase is in every way ambiguous and unstable.
