 The Daily Tar Heel
The Daily Tar Heel, now a staple of community life and five-day newspaper with a circulation of more than 30,000, found its humble origins at the outset of the university’s 100th anniversary, in 1893.
The seven-member editorial team of the first Tar Heel staff pasted the newspaper together in a small upstairs storeroom in a house next to the Old Methodist Church at 201 E. Rosemary St. But while subscriptions fell steadily until 1918, the paper itself grew in size to six pages printed on wider columns.
The Tar Heel slowly moved away from the control of the Athletic Association and completely changed its affiliation in 1923, officially transferring supervisory control to the Student Publications Union Board (The board was elected by students to oversee the Tar Heel, Carolina Magazine, the Carolina Buccaneer and the Yackety Yak).

Legal Aid of NC - Jobs - Tar Heel State   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
North Carolina is known as the "The Tar Heel" state, a nickname that apparently originated from comments made during the American Revolutionary War (18th Century) and in the War Between the States (19th Century).
According to this story, the troops of British General Cornwallis were fording what is now known as the Tar River between Rocky Mount and Battleboro (Eastern North Carolina) when they discovered that tar had been dumped into the stream to impede their crossing.
Their observation was that anyone who waded North Carolina rivers would acquire "tar heels." Such was the first reference to the nickname "Tar Heel" state.

Tar Heel Politics 2000 by Paul Luebke : Book
In Tar Heel Politics 2000, he argues that North Carolina's real political battle is between two factions of the state's political and economic elite: modernizers and traditionalists.
An updated and revised version of Luebke's Tar Heel Politics: Myths and Realities (1990), Tar Heel Politics 2000 highlights the resurgence of the southern Republican Party for the first time in a century and discusses a number of significant changes that have occurred over the last decade.
These include the institutionalization of a viable two-party system in the General Assembly, the further shift of native-born whites throughout the South into the Republican voting column, and ideological conflict in North Carolina that parallels to some extent the post-1994 battles between the Republican Congress and the Clinton White House.
