The ancient musical traditions of the "lautari" gypsies of Romania are extended through the unique performances of Taraf de Haïdouks, a band of twelve instrumentalists and singers aged twenty to seventy eight.
Taraf de Haïdouks, who take their name from the Haidouks, Robin Hood-like thieves who are recalled in many of the group's ballads, hail from the small Romanian vollage of Clejani, southwest of Bucharest.
Taraf de Haïdouks' self-titled fourth album was released in 1999.

The Taraf range in age from mid-20s to late-70s and came together as a touring outfit when a young Belgian promoter, fascinated by ethnomusicologist recordings from the village of Clejani, went and gathered a dozen of the village's best musicians, named them Taraf de Haidouks (band of outlaws) and set them touring in Northern Europe.

A first album was recorded during the Taraf's stay in Belgium, and was released at the end of 1991 on Crammed's newly-formed CramWorld label (which had also just signed Zap Mama).
This first album, "Musique des Tsiganes de Roumanie", introduced Western listeners to the rich musical world of the Romanian Gypsies, which includes medieval ballads, Turkish-flavoured dance tunes from the Balkans, and characteristic vocal inflections which are reminiscent of the Gypsy people's origins in the Indian sub-continent.
The second album by Taraf de Haïdouks, entitled "Honourable Brigands, Magic Horses and Evil Eye", was recorded in Romania in 1994.

They chose the name Taraf de Haidouks (a haidouk is the legendary, Robin Hood-like hero of Romanian folklore, a wanderer who defeats the powerful lords by using his wits; and taraf is a Turkish word designating a group of musicians).
Taraf de Haidouks' first tour led to the signing of a contract with Crammed Discs, who released their first album, entitled Musique des Tziganes de Roumanie, in 1991.
This is why Hanna Gorjaczkowska of Crammed Discs, the Haidouks' record label, has taken steps which she hopes will bring the Romanies of Clejani a certain amount of security.
