  Taragot - Wikipedia NL

 Romanian music - Taragot
The taragot was invented by the instrument maker J. Schunda, working in Budapest, with advice from the Hungarian composer Gyula Kaldy, and was used in the premier of Wagner's "Trestan and Isolde" in 1865.
Much like the earlier Saxophone, the Taragot has a conical tube similar to the oboe, and the single reed mouthpiece of the clarinet.
The taragot should not be confused with the older Hungarian "taragoto" which is a double reed shawm similar to the folk shawms found throughout Europe and the Middle East.

The Taragot (or Taragato) has also become an important instument for me: a woodwind instrument in Bb with a conical form similar to soprano saxophone.
Around 1890, the instrument maker Schunda of Budapest invented the Taragot in its present-day form – now with a clarinet-like mouthpiece and a key mechanism with characteristics of the oboe and the German clarinet.
In contrast to the clarinet, the Taragot overblows to the octave (like the oboe and the saxophone).

Indeed, this latter instrument's timbre was so penetrating that Ottoman armies used it to terrify their enemies, and its subsequent history has been no less martial.
The Hungarians also adopted it as their military instrument: in the 18th century the taragot became their symbol of resistance to foreign aggressors.
