The main objective of the invasion of Tarakan Island was the capture of the oilfields, oil refineries and the airfield located on the island.
Considering that west coast of Tarakan Island is more suitable for amphibious landings, the Dutch command expected the invasion will be conducted there, so when the amphibious landings were later successfully delivered on the east coast all were a little bit surprised.
In the afternoon, Tarakan Island was visible due the smoke caused by the Dutch destruction of the oilfields and other vital installations.

TARAKAN served in Australian and New Guinea waters as a general purpose vessel, but was mainly used for dumping condemned ammunition at sea.
On 25 January 1950 she was berthed alongside Garden Island, Sydney, making good defects prior to departure for New Guinea, when an explosion occurred aft under the mess decks, resulting in the deaths of seven sailors and one dockyard tradesman.
TARAKAN did not return to seagoing service and on 12 March 1954 she was sold on behalf of the United Kingdom Ministry of Transport to E.A. Marr and Sons Pty Ltd, of Mascot, Sydney, for breaking up.
