The catchment is also the reason why the majority of the district is in the Manawatu-Wanganui Region, although traditionally many of the people of the district regard themselves as living in either Hawke's Bay (in the north) or Wairarapa (in the south).
The district's chief town is Dannevirke, settled by immigrants from Denmark in the 19th century.
While the majority of Tararua District is part of the Manawatu-Wanganui Region, a small triangle of rural land north of the Owahanga River in the southeast of the district is part of Wellington Region.

The South Wairarapa District Council is situated at the southern most corner of the North Island and has an area of approximately 248,455 hectares (2484 square kilometres).
In the south, the district boundary follows the coastline from the western end of Palliser Bay in Cook Strait to Honeycomb Rock, east of Martinborough.
The District includes the towns of Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough which are the main population centres.

Tararua property values have leapt 64 percent in the last three years, playing catch up with the rest of the country but also benefiting from the robust rural economy.
In a presentation to the Tararua District Council, Quotable Value Ltd manager Simon Willocks also said that the land value had increased by 85 percent to $2.6 billion.

 Hawkes Bay Today
The proposal was initiated in March 2005 by a petition of Tararua electors living in the Woodville area.
In all, 121 signatures were gathered on the petition, calling for the Woodville district to become a ward of the Palmerston North City Council, rather than the Dannevirke-based Tararua District Council.
Both the Tararua District Council and the Palmerston North District Council decided that the proposal should be referred to the commission.

This was an appeal from an order under s30(3)/1993 appointing representatives of the häpu, iwi or general Mäori of the Tararua District for the purposes of consultation with the Tararua District Council (the lower court decisions are noted in Mäori LR Nov 1994 p2 and Jul 1995 p2).
Recognition of iwi by owners of Mäori land in a district is an important ingredient in establishing tangata whenua status.
The finding that both iwi were present in the Tararua District provided adequate grounds for the court to have appointed the two incorporated authorities of Rangitane and Kahungunu as appropriate representatives.

 Waitangi Tribunal - Wairarapa Ki Tararua Introduction
The Wairarapa ki Tararua inquiry district covers the area from the Manawatu Gorge down the ranges to the South Wairarapa coast, up the Pacific coast to north of Cape Turnagain following the Tararua District council boundary to north of Norsewood and down the Ruahine Ranges to the Gorge.
Wairarapa ki Tararua tribunal members Judge Carrie Wainwright, Professor Wharehuia Milroy, Dr Ranganui Walker and Dame Margaret Bazley, heard evidence and submissions on a total of 17 claims filed by members of Ngäti Kahungunu and Rangitäne hapü and other claimant groups.
This phase involves the Wairarapa ki Tararua Tribunal considering all of the evidence and submissions produced for the inquiry, and reporting in writing to the claimant community and the Crown on any findings and recommendations concerning the 17 statements of claim.
