		The catchment is also the reason why the majority of the district is in the Manawatu-Wanganui Region, although traditionally many of the people of the district regard themselves as living in either Hawke's Bay (in the north) or Wairarapa (in the south).
		The district's chief town is Dannevirke, settled by immigrants from Denmark in the 19th century.
		While the majority of Tararua District is part of the Manawatu-Wanganui Region, a small triangle of rural land north of the Owahanga River in the southeast of the district is part of Wellington Region.

	Hawkes Bay Today
		The proposal was initiated in March 2005 by a petition of Tararua electors living in the Woodville area.
		In all, 121 signatures were gathered on the petition, calling for the Woodville district to become a ward of the Palmerston North City Council, rather than the Dannevirke-based Tararua District Council.
		Both the Tararua District Council and the Palmerston North District Council decided that the proposal should be referred to the commission.

		The Wairarapa ki Tararua inquiry district covers the area from the Manawatu Gorge down the ranges to the South Wairarapa coast, up the Pacific coast to north of Cape Turnagain following the Tararua District council boundary to north of Norsewood and down the Ruahine Ranges to the Gorge.
