New South Wales is Australia’s premier state in more ways than one: it’s not only the oldest of the five states, but it’s the most densely populated too.
Including Sydney, New South Wales covers an area about twice the size of Britain, with roughly a tenth of its population; not a very big state by antipodean standards, but its six and a quarter million residents constitute one-third of the country’s population.
South of Sydney the coast is relatively undeveloped, and there’s a string of low-key family resorts and fishing ports, great for water sports and fishing.

New Collected Poems by Les Murray is published by Carcanet at £14.95.
