Target Acquisition: - It's Not Just For Military Imaging - July, 1998   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
In fact, the elements of "target acquisition" are the same for military uses as in the thousands of nonmilitary applications.
Target acquisition is generally concerned with detecting, recognizing and identifying points of interest.
For a biologist, the "target" might be a cell or a portion of a cell.

FM 17-12-8 Chapter 3 Target Acquisition
Target acquisition is the timely detection, location, and identification of targets in enough detail to attack accurately by either direct fire or supporting weapons.
Target identification is the recognition of a potential military target as being a particular target (such as a specific vehicle by type).
Target confirmation is the rapid verification of the initial identification and discrimination of the target.

The first is an image of the target in the target acquisition sub-array (100 x 100 pixel for POINT sources, user-defined for DIFFUSE sources) based on the initial pointing (see Figure 23.1a); image_raw.fits[sci,1]).
The software then determines the position of the target with a flux-weighted pointing algorithm and calculates the slew needed to place the target at a reference point in the target acquisition sub-array; for DIFFUSE sources, an option to perform a geometric centroiding is available.
An examination of the target acquisition data (either from the raw data or the paper products) will allow you to detect gross errors in the centering of your target.

FM 6-121 Chapter 1 Field Artillery Target Acquisition Doctrine and Systems
Target acquisition, however, is still an integral part of the entire targeting process.
Targeting is enhanced by the formation of the maneuver commander and his principal operational, intelligence, and fire support advisors into an informal functional team.
Field artillery target acquisition exists to support the maneuver commander's scheme of maneuver during the offense and to protect his most vulnerable assets during the defense.

Usability News - 5.1 2003 -- Making Computers Easier for Older Adults to Use
This technique was found to significantly improve target selection time in younger adults, suggesting that subjects were able to modify their initial motor response (i.e., to a small initial target) to take advantage of the final expanded target size.
Participants were introduced to the target acquisition task and allowed to practice each of the five conditions prior to beginning the experiment.
That is, in the 90% condition, the target had to reach its maximum size (or minimum size) within a much shorter movement distance than that for the 50% and 10% conditions, and therefore expand at a much faster rate.

 FUSE Target Acquisition Summary
This is complicated by the fact that most target acquisitions occur autonomously, so that failed acquisitions can have detrimental affects not only on a given observation, but potentially on those that follow in the schedule as well.
Acquisition cases are specified in the SCC to MP Interface Control Document (Rev. F), in section 3.3.7.
Offset targets of this type are expected to be very close to the target position so that no change in guide stars is required between the offset star and science target.

The abstract-architecture view comprises four component types, each of which constitutes a stage in the acquisition and generation of knowledge bases in knowledge-acquisition tools (see Figure 1).
The knowledge editors are part of the user interface of the target knowledge-acquisition tool; they operate on the internal knowledge representation in the knowledge-acquisition tool, and provide views of the representation.
Furthermore, the knowledge modules serve as an intermediate representation in the transformation of the knowledge acquired into the target knowledge base (see Figure 1).

Boeing SLAM-ER Becomes First Missile with Operational Automatic Target Acquisition
An independent test team from the U.S. Navy's Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 9 conducted the evaluation at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, Calif. The OPEVAL report issued by Commander, Operational Test and Evaluation Force on Sept. 3, 2002, grades the SLAM-ER ATA operationally effective and operationally suitable.
Algorithms in the computer examine output from the missile's infrared imager for target locations, enabling the ATA system to locate small targets in cluttered environments and either cue the pilot or guide the missile autonomously to the target.
It has several different modes for tracking targets using its seeker including being directed to a desired impact point manually by an operator in an aircraft.

The visible light image is used for target acquisition and guiding.
Because the dichroic comes before the filter, location of a star on the guide camera TV depends only on telescope orientation and not on which filter is in use.
In practice this means that for each filter, targets must be placed in a different place on the guide camera TV.

The STIS on-board target acquisition and acquisition/peakup routines have been designed to accurately locate a target in the center of a slit or behind a bar/wedge.
All acquisitions use the CCD camera to initially obtain a direct image of the target field.
Analysis to date of STIS acquisitions (ACQ) for point sources have shown that the ACQ is positioning the target within 0.025 arcseconds of the center of the aperture; diffuse source acquisitions are slightly less accurate, depending on the size of the source.

MK 23 Target Acquisition System (TAS)
The Target Acquisition System (TAS) Mk 23 is a detection, tracking, identification, threat evaluation, and weapon assignment system designed especially for use against high-speed, small cross-section targets which approach the ship either from over-the-horizon at very low altitudes or from very high altitudes at near vertical angles.
The TAS integrates a medium-range, two-dimensional, air-search radar subsystem; an IFF subsystem (covered in a separate paragraph); a display subsystem; and a computer subsystem to provide automatic/manual target detection and tracking, target identification, threat evaluation, and weapon assignment capabilities for engagement of air tracks.
The loss of the 1390-1400 MHz band segment under OBRA 93 and the proposed reallocation of the 1385-1390 MHz band segment from military to civilian users will result in an 8 percent reduction of the frequencies available for the Navy’s shipborne radars and the MK 23 TAS.

If you were wondering why Google’s stock has rebounded back up over $300 despite market panic over a three-cent miss in its earnings report, that’s the reason.
While investors were busy unloading Google Inc.’s stock after the company warned Thursday of slowing third-quarter sales growth, Prudential Equity Group LLC analyst Mark Rowen went the other way, raising his price target for the world’s biggest media company to $400 (U.S.), the highest of any analyst.
Excluding traffic acquisition costs, the company posted $890-million in net revenue, a 110-per-cent growth rate year-over-year.
