Targhee Pass (elevation 7072 ft/2156 m), is a mountain pass located on the continental divide in the Henrys Lake Mountains along the border between southeastern Idaho and southwestern Montana in the United States.
U.S. Highway 20 crosses the pass, approximately 15 mi (24 km) west of West Yellowstone, Montana, on the western boundary of Yellowstone National Park.
The pass is located in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.

It drains the northeastern corner of the Snake River Plain along the continental divide.
It rises out of Henrys Lake, west of Targhee Pass on the continental divide on the border with Montana.
In central Fremont County, after passing through Island Park Caldera, it descends swiftly, flowing over both Upper Mesa and Lower Mesa Falls, and emerges from the mountains onto the Snake River Plain near Ashton.

This unnamed and seldom-seen waterfall is near Pete Creek on the Continental Divide in the Centennial Mountains.
The Continental Divide Trail passes within fifty feet of this viewpoint, but trekkers will never know it is there unless they keep track of their position on a topographical map and climb a few feet to the ridgeline.
On their westward trek, they thought this 7373 foot pass would give them direct access to the Columbia River drainage, but were discouraged by the view of Idaho's Lemhi Range, whose snow-covered peaks posed yet another challenge.

The standard route, known by the 1870s as the Bannock Trail, started at Camas Meadows and, moving east, crossed Targhee Pass and the basin of the Madison River.
That day, August 24, the Nez Perces passed from the Firehole River up the East Fork of the Firehole (later designated Nez Perce Creek), ascending Mary Mountain and skirting Mary Lake (about one-half mile long, north to south, and one-quarter mile wide) and Hot Sulphur Springs (today Highland Hot Springs) on the Central Plateau.
Furthermore, by 1878 a trail paralleled Pelican Creek for much of its length and beyond its headwaters, passing near or across the heads of several tributaries (particularly Timothy Creek) of the East Fork of the Yellowstone (Lamar River).

Trail does not go where the Targhee Peak, ID quad shows, but rather to a pass with sign reading 9333 NE of Black Mt. (10237).
At this pass trail connects to CDT which took me to a 9980 saddle (sign slightly higher reads Targhee Pass 10,000 ft).
From there I climbed Targhee Peak, highest named summit in Fremont Co. CDT went down and NE, I bushwhacked to the 3 candidate points.

this spot was especially notable because, as i passed this sign for 'upper coffeepot campground,' my odometer rolled over to 3000.
we rode up over targhee pass (again the continental divide, tho' this time just over 7000 feet).
riding over the pass wasn't half the challenge that riding up the hill out of ashton had been earlier in the day.

The Teton Pass Trail was included in the U.S. Department of Transportation's Millennium Trails Program in 1998, receiving more than $1 million in initial federal funding.
The project involved building a paved trail in the Targhee National Forest that would have connected Victor, Idaho, to the top of Teton Pass near Wilson.
Another trail will connect Teton Pass with the Old Pass Road, a nonmotorized route up the east side of the pass.

Ida Craig Wilcox, who was the first tourist to cross the pass.
In 1875, the island was renamed Belknap Island by members of Interior Secretary Belknap's party, who passed through the park that year.
Apparently named before the Hayden Expedition of 1872, and appears in Hayden's report as "Targhee," "Tyghee," and "Tahgee." It was thought by Hayden that it was for an old Indian chief, but he notes that it was an old Bannock chief in one section, and says elsewhere he believed it was a Shoshone chief.
