The major waterway basin of Gorj county includes the river Jiu (its middle course) that flows in its territory from the Lainici Pass to the junction with the river Gilort.
The town of Brancusi's monuments, the municipality of Targu Jiu is the capital city of this county.
In Targu Jiu the tourists are to visit the County Museum founded in 1894, different memorial houses and others as: Administrative Palace, "Gorj" Hotel, Commercial Bank, etc. In Curtisoara, in a picturesque place there is Cula Cornoius fortified house built in the XVIII-th century and an interesting village museum.

From 1940 as a consequence of the Second Vienna Award, Targu Mureş was ceded to then-fascist Hungary.
Târgu Jiu is a town in the Gorj county, Oltenia, Romania.
It situated among the lower slopes of the Carpathian Mountains, on the East bank of the river Jiu, and at the terminus of a branch railway which joins the main Wallachian line between Drobeta-Turnu Severin and Craiova.

TARGU JIU, Romania, July 14 (Reuters) - In 1904, a young carpenter, stone mason and flute player set out on foot from rural Romania to reach Paris and become one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century.
Some 30 years later, Constantin Brancusi returned to the town of Targu Jiu on the edge of the southwestern Carpathians to create the only monumental sculptures of his career as a tribute to his homeland's fallen World War One heroes.
Brancusi donated the Targu Jiu complex to his country in 1937 but died in Paris 20 years later before he could complete his vision of a park filled with sculptures, banned from Romania by its communist dictators.

International Brancusi scholars at Târgu Jiu for a symposium in the spring of 2001 felt that the WMF made the right decision by carefully balancing conservation and restoration.
In 1992, the entire ensemble at Târgu Jiu was declared a monument of “public utility and national interest” by the Romanian government.

As early as June 21, 1941, Ion Antonescu ordered that all able-bodied eighteen- to sixty-year-old Jewish males in all villages lying between the Siret and the Prut Rivers be removed to the Târgu Jiu camp in Oltenia and to villages surrounding that camp.
In addition to Târgu Jiu, the Ministry of the Interior and certain military garrisons set up camps in Craiova, Caracal, Turnu Severin, and Lugoj.
During their trip their number grew to 578 as more Communists, sympathizers, suspects, and would-be emigrants arrested in provincial towns were boarded onto the trains.

In 1937-1938 Brancusi made a sculptural complex in Targu Jiu, Romania, composed by three masterpieces gathered in an open-air place and dedicated to the heroes of the I WW (Table of Silence, Gate of Kiss and Endless Column).
From the ethnological point of view, the Targu Jiu monuments are the cosmical representation of the human life, started at birth, symbolized by the Silence Table, and closed with the death, symbolized by the Endless Column (a stylization of the funeral poles from the south-east of Romania).
The distance between them, which represent the time given to a human life, is interrupted by the Kiss Gate, the symbol of marriage and of the start of a new vital cycle.
