TARIN KOWT, 22/06/06 - Defence Minister Henk Kamp made a well-kept secret visit on Tuesday and yesterday to the Dutch troops in Afghanistan.
In Tarin Kowt, 375 troops are preparing for the arrival of the main force of 1,400 which will be operational under the NATO umbrella for two years from 1 August.
In Tarin Kowt, there are now seven convoys each of around 35 vehicles, of which over half are Patria vehicles which protect the other vehicles.

As the Bobcats of B Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, pull their troops from the Tarin Kowt area, the ANA's 3rd Kandak, 1st Brigade, 205th Corps, is moving in.
The standup of the ANA in Tarin Kowt brings security to the area that villagers are more likely to welcome, said ANA Capt. Kamrullden.

Dutch commandos carrying out reconnaissance operations due north of the provincial capital, Tarin Kowt, have already met with regular armed resistance from members of the Taliban, and have returned fire on each occasion.
Most of the clashes with the Taliban have reportedly taken place in the mountainous region along the valley that connects Tarin Kowt with Chora, which is located further north.
This area is, incidentally, one of historic importance to the Afghans, for it was here during the time of the Soviet occupation that the Mujahedeen scored an enormous victory when they managed to decimate an entire Soviet tank brigade and a number of commando units in a valley not far from Deh Rawood.
