Tarn Taran Sahib is a city with population of more than 100,000 and is situated near Amritsar, in the state of Punjab, India.
Tarn Taran has many Gurdwaras, which include Gurdwara Sri Tarn Taran Sahib, Gurdwara Guru Ka Khooh, Bibi Bhani Da Khooh (demolished by a few miscreants), Takkar Sahib, Lakir Sahib, Gurdwara Jhoolna Mahal Thati Khara.
Tarn Taran was famous as the hotbed of Sikh extremist militancy during the 1980's and early 1990's.

TARN TARAN (31°27'N, 74°56'E), important centre of Sikh pilgrimage 24 km south of Amritsar, was founded by Guru Arjan in 1596.
Further development of Tarn Taran remained suspended until 1768, when Sardar Budh Singh of Faizullapuria misi occupied the entire parganah ofPatti, uprooted the village of Nur Din and the serai, and brought their bricks back to the site of this sarovar.
After the annexation of the Punjab to the British dominions, the management of the shrines at Tarn Taran, along with those at Amritsar, was entrusted to a Sarbarah or manager appointed by the deputy commissioner ofAmritsar.

Sri Harimander Sahib (Temple of God) was built in Amrisar and even the name Amritsar originates and coincides with the construction of Sri Harimander or Darbar Sahib as it is commonly known.
The gold upon Sri Harimander Sahib was added by Maharajah Ranjit Singh during his sovereign reign and has added to the grandeur and spledour and awe that one experiences when visiting Sri Harimander Sahib (it was from hereon that the name of Golden Temple became famous).

Tarn Taran, Punjab (KP) - On March 9, 1940 the SGPC advisory committee passed a resolution to allow ‘amritdhari' (baptized) Sikh women to perform ‘kirtan' (singing of divine hymns) inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple.
Gurdip Singh, manager of Darbar Sahib since one year, said the permission was given to Gurbachan Kaur and her husband by the SGPC.
She also stated that there was no gender discrimination in Sikhism and that the SGPC had given its views to the Sikh clergy as sought by the Jathedar of Akal Takhat, and it was expected that they would help in ending gender discrimination.

When Dr Kanwarjit Singh Kang, a renowned fresco expert, visited Darbar Sahib, Tarn Taran, in June 1971 in connection with his Ph.D thesis “Mural paintings in the 19th century Punjab”, several frescos were intact in the upper storey of the shrine.
According to Dr Kang, though originally the paintings were executed sometime in the middle of the 19th century, the dome of the shrine developed cracks during an earthquake in 1905 and was rebuilt again and embellished afresh with murals.

A religious gathering was held at Akal Takht, Amritsar on 15th-16th November 1920 A.D. In this a committee of one hundred and seventy-five members was formed which was named Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee.
The committee of the Sikhs wsa in control of managment of Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar since the 13th October 1920 A.D. The managment of Gurdwara, Taran Tarn fell under Sri Darbar sahib but the priests had become self-willed being far away from Amritsar.
On the 25th January, 1921 A.D., Bhai Teja Singh Bhuchar with a Squad of forty Singhs reached Gurudwara Tarn Taran at 8 A.M after reciting Guru's word for two hours in Gurudwara, the squad told the priests the purpose of committee.
