Tarnishing is superficial corrosion of the carat gold surface and is evident by a usually dark discolouration - the tarnish film.
Pure gold, of course, is not susceptible to tarnishing and this property is generally not greatly reduced by alloying to carat golds as long as the gold content is high enough, i.e.
Thus tarnishing is generally seen only in the lower carat golds (8-10 ct), occasionally in14 and 18 ct and even higher caratages in some countries.

 Tarnish Removal from Silver
Silver tarnishes because it undergoes a chemical reaction with sulfur-containing substances in the air.
Depending on the amount of tarnish, the silver will be bright and the aluminum foil may be brown with tarnish (aluminum oxide), in a short while.
This could be a simple example of a chemical reaction, or it could be used as a visual to demonstrate properties of sulfur, when learning the periodic table, and the physical and chemical characteristics of the major elements.

The biggest myth among consumers, says Gutterman, is that tarnish is caused by exposure to air, and therefore silver should be hidden away in cupboards and sideboards until ready to use.
This is the key to preserving your silver -- remove the tarnish, but limit the frequency of polishing silver, as all polishes remove some of the silver.
After the tarnish is removed, rinse the piece completely, this time in cold water, and immediately dry it thoroughly to avoid spots.

Tarnish Prevention   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Usually what is called tarnish in silver objects is due to reactions between the silver metal with several gases present at the atmosphere and water (humidity) including even the oxygen and also some polluting sulphide gases.
So the main thing is to prevent the contact between silver objects and the air (and humidity of course!) Try not to use polythene bags for storage, especially the 'gripper' type as they trap gases inside and create a greenhouse type environment, which is particularly good at creating tarnish.
It is not as pretty, but I have kept pieces wrapped for a couple of years with little tarnish to clean.

The chemical cleaning of silver is an electrochemical process in which the electrons move from the aluminum to the silver in the tarnish.
This process causes the silver object to become shiny again as the silver atoms are regenerated from the silver ions present in the tarnish.

Tarnish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When tarnish occurs, it is treated chemically, usually with strong acids.
Most tarnishing is prevented by tinning, a process by which the reactive substance is coated in a non-reactive substance (such as tin or wax), and thus protected from oxygen.

The scope of this investigation includes preliminary analysis, characterization of the tarnish, and a study of its rate of occurrence on a group of 110 daguerreotype plates.
The findings indicate that the presence of this fluorescing tarnish may provide evidence of specific past treatments applied to daguerreotype plates.

Such tarnish is removed by the composition and the composition treats the metal surface to retard the re-appearance of tarnish contaminants.
Dipping a tarnished piece, whether tableware or jewelry, into this solution, and allowing it to remain immersed for a short period of time will remove the residual tarnish, brighten the article, and will maintain the metallic brilliance without tarnishing for a significantly longer period than the same silver alloy not treated in this manner.
The composition and methods for removing tarnish from metal surfaces involve the application of an aqueous solution of and acid or acids, thiourea and a transition metal or metals for the purpose of removing tarnish and preventing its reformation.

The dark purple-blue-fl silver tarnish that most of us are familiar with occurs when the outer layer of silver reacts with sulphur.
This sulphur can come from a variety of sources, including: from one's hands, from storing or displaying the silver near objects or substances that give off sulphur, and from the air around us (air pollution).
Latex, which is found in elastics and latex gloves, also contains enough sulphur to cause silver to tarnish.
