Tarocchi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tarocchi (Italian name), also known as tarock (German-Austrian name) and Tarot (French name), is a trick-taking game, and one of the oldest card games known.
The playing material (deck with usually 4x14 normal Italian or normal French suits with additional 21 trumps and a Fool) is older than the name of the game, which, according current research state, became known in the year 1505 parallel in France (Taraux) and Ferrara (Italy, as Tarocchi) (Tarot press note).
The so-called "esoteric" decks used for divination are usually ill-suited for playing, for example the corner symbols are missing; thus there are regular playing decks in the countries where tarocchi is popular.

Tarocchi del Mantegna: Arts and Sciences
The C series of the Tarocchi del Mantegna, the central one in the progression, depicts the arts and sciences.
The Tarocchi del Mantegna, on the other hand, is completely lacking the "dark cards" (Traitor, Death, Devil, Fire) that occur near the middle of the tarot sequence.
The Tarocchi del Mantegna is intellectual, pedagogic, and idealistic.

 Tarocchi of Mantegna
In part this association of the tarot with Jewish esotericism lies in the fact that there are 22 major arcana cards in the modern tarot pack and this parallels the number of letters in the Hebrew alphabet, which lies at the heart of the Kabbalistic system.
This is one of the earliest known tarot or Tarocchi packs, being dated to c.1465, contemporary with the Visconti-Sforza deck of the mid-fifteenth century which is recognised as the earliest tarot.
Most scholars are of the opinion that this Tarocchi has been wrongly attributed to Andreas Mantegna (1431-1506) the painter and printmaker of the School of Padua, and rather are to be seen as emanating from the School of Ferrara.

Research of Tarocchi: Count Matteo Maria Boiardo and his Trionfi Poem
At the current moment of Tarocchi research this is the oldest reference to a deck with 22 trumps, other earlier documents do suggest, that Trionfi cards were handled before in 5x13 (Lucca-Tarocchi), 5x14 (Bembo-14, Ferrarese documents of 1441 and 1457) or 5x16-structure (Cary-Yale).
From this it must be suspected, that Count Boiardo possibly invented this structure, which finally developed to be the standard representation of the Tarocchi- or Tarot-game.
In this engaging glimpse of the Boiardo Tarocchi poem translated by Jane Cocker, we also touch on one of the early turns where poetry and playing cards meet in the courtly society of 15th century.

The Origin of Tarot (Tarocchi or Tarock): The early Trionfi Cards had only 14 Trumps
In the research of early Tarocchi the 20 trumps of Pierpont-Morgan-Bergamo-cards are mostly considered to be a proof of an early distribution of Tarocchi-cards (or Tarotcards or Trionfi cards) near to the style and order of the Tarot de Marseille, which became in later development the standard of modern Tarotcards.
As the Pierpont-Morgan-Bergamo-Tarocchi is considered to be constructed in the reign of Francesco Sforza (1450 - 1466), the deck serves usually as argument, that Tarocchi decks or better Trionfi decks with the structure "4x14 pip+court-cards and 22 trumps" were common before that time.
However, there had been various suggestions by Tarocchi researchers in the past, that the mentioned six cards were not lost but added in later times, so that the original Bembo-deck actually would have then consisted only of 5x14 cards and the 14 trumps were originally considered as a 5th suit.

Labarinto and the Tarrochi of Mantegna
The figures in the 1616 edition were based on the Tarocchi of Mantegna (see my article in the Autumn 1983 issue of the Hermetic Journal).
The use of the Tarocchi of Mantegna derived emblems may have little significance, since the first edition used another set of images.
However, the fact that the work was published in this form in 1616, during the explosion of hermetic and alchemical publications, is very suggestive that some hermetic riddle is woven into its strange structure.

he so-called Tarocchi di Mantegna are a set of 50 copper-engraved images (c.1465) which were probably a social game or instructional series for educated people.
The outward design and hierarchical structure, beginning with the fool and leading up via craftsmen to the aristocracy, the king and the pope, is similar.
A distinction is that the Tarocchi reflects a world order prompted by humanism, with the aristocracy and the church ranking lower than the arts, the sciences, the virtues, the planets and the spheres.

Thus the number of Crypto Jews in Sicily and Malta was quite large and the practice of using tarocchi cards as a disguise for religious services was probably quite widespread.
In short, i now believe that the association of tarocchi cards with Jewish mysticism predated the rise of the occult-Egyptomania craze and that the authors who partook of this craze were merely repeating something true.
I think, rather, based on the date of the earliest tarocchi decks and the date of the Spanish order of expulsion, that Jews *adapted* the cards for use to disguise prayers and religious teachings.

as Kaplan writes, in his introduction to the Visconti-Sforza (Pierpont Morgan-Bergamo) Tarocchi Deck: The term *tarocchi* was used in Italy in the early sixteenth century, and quite probably in the fifteenth century, to describe the complete 78-card deck consisting of 22 Major Arcana or trump cards and 56 Minor Arcana or suit cards.
The words *tarocchi* and *tarocco* are often used interchangeably, although *tarochi* is actually the plural of *tarocco*.
Some scholars believe the modern 52-card playing card deck derives from the early tarocchi packs -- the knight and page having been combined to form the jack and the 22 trump cards having been dropped, with the exception of the Fool which survives as the Joker.

Tarocchi del Mantegna: Ranks of Humanity
The lowest ten cards in the Tarocchi del Mantegna, numbered 1 through 10 and labeled with the letter E (or S in some printings) depict the "estates of man", or the ranks of human society, to use a more modern expression.
When this series is compared with the lowest-ranked picture cards in the tarot deck, strong parallels appear, even though the two systems are far from identical.
Whatever the reasons for this last decision, it must certainly have added interest to the game and provoked some interesting conversations among players.

FAQ#2—What does the name Tarot mean?
Secondly, the Tarocchi deck was introduced into France, where its name was changed to, or was initially adopted as, Tarot.
In Germany, for example, the name became Tarock (Tarocchi is pronounced hard—Tar-OK-Kee), in Hungary Tarokk and in France it became Tarot—although a number of variations on the spelling were used for some time before the final orthography was accepted.
In fact, it may be that the immediate root for Tarot is tara/tare, and tara is even suggested as the real root for Tarocchi, but that seems unlikely, given the close similarity between Tarocchi and taraha.
