Tarogato was also resounding at the crowning of Leopold II in Pozsony while the guard was carrying the crown across the bridge.
The reviews of the concert reported about the interesting timbre of the instrument: "there is something lamenting in the tarogato sound with especially beautiful tones in the middle register while somewhat dissatisfactory in the higher register, nevertheless it is the closest to human voice of all the winds".
The modified tarogato was presented by Gyula Káldy in a historic concert at the Hungarian Academy of Science where it produced sensation when demonstrated and played by Henrik Hichisch, the clarinetist at the Hungarian Royal Opera and teacher at the National Conservatory.

Gingras has a new toy: the tarogato (Feb15'99)
The clarinet professor’s latest research venture involves the study of the tarogato, a Hungarian folk instrument which sounds somewhat like a sopano saxophone, has a straight, wooden body with a conical bore, and sports a single reed mouthpiece similar to the clarinet.
Gingras is coaching with tarogato specialist Gheorghe Trimbitas who immigrated from Romania in 1995 and performs with the Cleveland-based Transylvania Group.
According to Gingras, the predecessor of the tarogato was a double reed instrument which, at the beginning of the 18th century, was very popular among the adherents of the Rakoczy movement.

The Tarogato refers to two different musical instruments, both of them Hungarian.
Up to about the 18th Century, the tarogato was a type of shawm, with a double reed.
In 1890, a new instrument was invented, which is also called the tarogato.

The Slovak Spectator - Slovakia's English Language Newspaper
The tarogato, which musicians agree is hard to play because it is so difficult to keep in tune, acquired the form that is known today in 1889.
This instrumental piece begins with a gentle tambourine rhythm, which is soon broken by a sharp sound from the tarogato, which then leads into a jazzy drum beat and strings.
The lively, rhythmical tarogato tunes in the first composition are followed by two grand classical tracks: Adagio by the Venetian musician Benedetto Marcello and a glorious extract from the ballet Swan Lake - Romanca in F minor - by Russian composer Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky.

 SLAM Productions, Oxfordshire, UK
Dividing his time between his trademark tarogato and baritone saxophone, Haslam sets the tone for each improvised piece either with gruff, occasionally blearily dignified baritone statements or with the more strident, querulous sound of the Hungarian instrument.
Haslam alternates between baritone saxophone and tarogato (perhaps now an equal partner with the baritone, his main axe), sometimes simultaneously, while Hession largely sticks to a whirlwind of drums and cymbal expressionism.
A tarogato pioneer before it was adopted by other saxophonists like Peter Brötzmann, the reedist often relies on its grainy, not-quite-alto, and not-quite-tenor, timbre to leaven the baritone's bellow.

"S-RWF" Jakob the Liar - Edward Shearmur
His tarogato is made by Stowasser of Budapest around 1920, which makes this one of the best specimen of them all.
Both accordeon and tarogato (or actually clarinet in real klezmer) are very important in that tradition, so Shearmur used them a lot and for various moods.
The tarogato is used here for amusement use, though this could also be used for a dramatic part.

The Hungarian/Romanian tarogato, which is quite similar to a soprano saxophone, has also been speculated to have been an inspiration.
However, this cannot be so, as the modern tarogato with a single reed mouthpiece was not developed until the 1890's, long after the saxophone had been invented.
It is likely that Sax's intent was to invent an entirely new instrument which suited his desires both tonally and technically and possessed a new level of flexibility.

The tarogato part (played here on bass clarinet) includes notated and improvised material and was inspired by performance practices associated with the long history of that noble instrument.
When the bass clarinet improvises, in three sections that are characterized by increased activity and wilder gestures, the program also improvises, elaborating on material taken from the tarogato part.
The result is a meeting of the traditional and technological, in which the exotic strains of Hungarian folk music are enhanced by the computer context created to support it.

Hungarians once used the ancient tarogato—a deep-toned, clarinet-like woodwind of remote Tibetan ancestry—much as the Romans, and the Scots and Irish after them, used the bagpipe: the tarogato's sound was a stirring call to war.
In skirmishes with their Austrian rulers in the early 17003, patriotic tarogato players could arouse their fellow peasants to wild combat fury merely by playing their favorite songs of freedom.
The annoyedAustrians finally saw the point, and burned every tarogato they could find. But a few of the instruments survived, and one 130-year-old copy turned up at...

Radio Free Europe, is an old hand at the tarogato; he charmed Carnegie Hall's audience with his skillful exposition of its haunting personality.
Although the instrument has a range of only two octaves—excluding it from ordinary orchestra work —its tone is rich and expressive; its sound is as compelling as any instrument in the woodwind family.
The Communist regime, recalling how the tarogato's vibrant voice of freedom made trouble for the Austrians, has banned it.
