The construction of the Gorge unearthed huge marble deposits--I would have guessed there is much marble to be found, as the drive took you through marble and granite formations that tower hundreds of feet above the mist generated by the raging river below.
At one time, industries wanted to mine Taroko Gorge itself, but luckily for the Taiwanese and for the rest of us who has gotten to see this "eighth wonder of the world," the conservationists prevailed.
