Taroona was used as a troop ship during World War and ventured at least as far north as New Guinea.
It had a gross tonage of 12,037 tons and was 445 feet in length, and was the largest vessel of this type in the world when built while its route was one of the longest open water routes in the world for a vessel of this type.

The Taroona Congregation meets in a house type building at 1 Taroona Crescent, Taroona (just off the Channel Highway) about 10 km South of Hobart.
Prior to union in June 1977 the Taroona Congregation was already a united church with Methodist, Congregationalist and Presbyterian combining to form a congregation.
This arrangement was in place from 1954 until the congregation agreed to enter the Uniting Church and become part of the former Kingborough Parish.

Bligh actually had three mutinies, the Bounty in 1779 when he fell out with Fletcher Christian and his crew, in 1797 when he was ousted from command of another ship during the Nore Mutiny and in 1808 when he was promoted to Governor of New South Wales.
No blood was shed in the mutiny and sightseers and children looked on as red-coated military dragged Bligh from where he was hiding under a servant's bed.
He spent a year in prison before escaping south to Tasmania and eventually heading back to London where he was exonerated and promoted to the rank of rear admiral.

If you have spent time delving amongst the boulder-strewn shores or shallow rock pools scattered across the southern Australian shoreline, you have probably seen the armour-plated shells of the Chiton.
This animal was originally called “Taroona” by the aboriginals who’s range included what is now the suburb of Taroona in south eastern
The shell of these small molluscs is usually oval-shaped and made up of eight plates fitting against each other like the steel plates of a suit of armour, hence it’s common name, 'Coat-of-mail' shells.
