Tarot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The earliest extant specimens of Tarot decks are of North Italian origin and date to the early to mid-15th century.
The oldest of these existing Tarot decks was perhaps painted to celebrate a mid-15th century wedding joining the ruling Visconti and Sforza families of Milan, probably painted by Bonifacio Bembo and other miniaturists of the Ferrara school.
A widely-used esoteric Tarot deck is Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot (pronounced "tote" or "thoth").

 Tarot
While Crowley's Thoth deck developed to incorporate Qabalistic theory along the lines of the developing OTO ("Ordo Templi Orientis") and Golden Dawn systems, A.E. Waite's interpretation of the Tarot stands today virtually as the standard by which all Tarot decks are judged.
Many who seek the services of a Tarot reader or psychic are concerned with a "surface" problem that has manifested in their life, but refuse to deal with the underlying issues that cause the problem.
The Tarot's unique development from its origins as a simple parlor game, to its evolution as a divinatory tool, to its more modern development as a means for self-development and awareness, provides a tempting, elaborate, and many-faceted subject that can engage the interest of historians, mystics and occultists alike.

 Review: Minchiate Tarot Deck
The Minchiate Tarot Deck is a modern interpretation of the Minchiate deck.
While the drawings are in the same style as the artist's Renaissance Tarot Deck, the Minchiate does not have the latter's lush coloring and lavish details.
I recommend this deck for everyone but the most rank beginner, as it is not suitable as a first Tarot deck.

 jk's Tarot Deck Buyer's Guide
Waite's Tarot, illustrated by the Art Nouveau artist Pamela Colman Smith, is the most popular Tarot deck in the world, whose design has been endlessly copied or stolen by people who knew and cared little for the symbolic ideas of A. Waite.
While Crowley's deck is certainly the superior aesthetically and from a dogmatic and even cartomantic point of view, it is Waite's dogma and symbolism which has really captivated (and mostly escaped the understanding of) the world.
The resurgent interest in Tarot, and all things occult, which had been fueled in the late 1960s by the counter-cultural movements, and which were understood to be evidence of a new spiritual age, had been condensed and commodified into a Broadway musical in 1968, Hair!.

I designed this deck not as fortune telling cards, per se, but as a link to the subconscious — to bring to the forefront of one's mind those bits of information that lay hidden or obfuscated amongst all the confusion of the many elements of a situation.
The deck consists of eclectic images and montages spanning from the 16th century to the 1990's, depending on how I interpreted the meaning of each card.

The HANSON-ROBERTS tarot deck is by far my favorite of all the traditional tarot decks, because it has a "lightness of being," fairy-like or angelic quality to it, while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the original Tarot symbols.
This is a Tarot deck to cherish forever as both a work of art and a divination tool to share with others -- especially those with sensitive natures.
My first Tarot deck was a Hanson-Roberts more than ten years ago, and when I lost that deck after two years, I went through several different kinds, thinking I should try one of the more `unique' decks out there.

Byzant Tarot - Structure of the Tarot
The precise origins of the Tarot remain a mystery, but over time a fairly consistent standard has evolved for the structure of a Tarot deck.
Early decks were of several types with differing numbers of cards, and some contemporary decks vary the system to accommodate the underlying non-Tarot philosophies on which they are based.

This is the deck I first bought, it is easy to use and gives clear answers. The artwork is beautiful as it captures the essence of the cards.
What evolves from that, is a deck that offers little in the way of imagery to aid card meaning recall, and a very boring deck where the author simply trys to display a single vampire in 78 interesting ways.
I obviously cannot say if the author is a Tarot master, but the point is the deck gives the impression they are not; there simply seems to be no love of or understanding of Tarot injected into this deck.

Although the Tarot was first used in a game called Triumphs, it was quickly adopted as a tool for divination, and popularized by occult societies such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
The early Tarot symbolism was deeply rooted in Medieval and Renaissance Europe, but over the centuries it has grown to incorporate everything from Astrology and Kabbalah to Runes (which predate the Tarot by 1000 years) and the I Ching (which predates the Tarot by 2500 years).
Today, the Tarot is far and away the most popular tool for spiritual introspection in the West.
