Among the documents are first-hand accounts by deportees, the court cases of a number of inmates and the forms filled in for prisoners entering the former Tarrafal concentration camp on the island of Santiago.
Created in April 1936, the Tarrafal Penal Colony was intended as a way to combat the overcrowding of jails in Portugal, alongside a series of other similar structures in Angola, Mozambique, Portuguese Guinea, Timor and Macau.
Tarrafal, in contrast to the other camps, was a closed penitentiary aimed at political and social prisoners, some of whom were accused to extremism or communism.

Some 600 kilometers off the west coast of Senegal, the Cape Verde archipelago was first settled in the fifteenth century by the Portuguese, who controlled the islands for more than five centuries, during which time they used them as a hub for shipping and the slave trade.
In 1933, the Portuguese dictator Antonio de Oliveira Salazar established the prison camp of Tarrafal on Santiago Island, where all manner of political opponents as well as African nationalists rebelling against colonial rule in Cape Verde, Angola, and Guinea-Bissau were imprisoned and tortured.
It is for this reason that the Association of Former Political Prisoners of Cape Verde is seeking to restore the Tarrafal complex as a museum.

The road connecting Cabeçalinho to Palhal will cost a total of 10 million escudos and is being financed through a program contract signed by the central government and the Tarrafal de São Nicolau installation commission.
The road will have an extension of six kilometers, and its construction will be able to employ all of Palhal’s 60 residents.
The president of the installation commission adds that work on the project for the utilization of water from the Mané Bau spring is also expected to begin soon.

Vila Tarrafal, or Mangui as it is called by the locals, sits below Monte Graciosa (Graciosa mountain) at the northern most end of Santigao Island.
In this picture you can see the primary school, praca (or town square), and Igreja do Santo Amaro (St. Amaro Church.) The Mangui is where all the trading takes place on Mondays and Thursdays, when farmers come from the rural zones and sell their vegetables, animals, grogo, and other goods.

After a night in Praia with dozens of bites, we headed to Tarrafal by Aluguer (the local public transport with minibusses - Toyota vans etc) It was a long trip across the island, basically due to the long transit in Assomada.
We stayed in Praia in the Hotel Hollande on the other plateau (Achada De Santo Antonio) since the other place before was not quite something to suffer again!.
