In the days of Martin, the tartans seemed to be used to distinguish the inhabitants of different districts and not the inhabitants of different families as at present.
The tartan of a Scottish clan is a sequence of colors and shades unique to the material, authorised by the clan society for use by members of that clan for kilts, ties, and other garments and decorations.
In the Celtic regions of Cornwall and Wales tartans and kilts have been adopted as part of the 19th and 20th century Celtic revival and the traditional Northumbrian tartan, known in Scotland as the Shephard's Tartan, perhaps the oldest tartan design in Britain, is common and worn by Northumbrian Pipers.

Tartan Day celebrates the existing and historical links between Scotland and Scottish descendants overseas.
In North America Tartan Day is held on April 6, the anniversary of the date on which the Declaration of Arbroath was created in 1320 whereas in Australia and New Zealand, it is held on July 1, the anniversary of the repeal of the Act of Proscription in 1782.
Not only was the United States Declaration of Independence modeled on that inspirational document but also almost half of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent and the Governors in 9 of the original 13 States were of Scottish ancestry.

Tartan Day ceremonies are planned for the afternoon of Friday, April 7, 2006, in front of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.

Here are some facts about Tartan Day from the recent newsletter of the Clan Ross Association of Canada, Inc., courtesy of our ever-vigilant secretary Ian Mackay Ross.
Tartan Day was established for people of Scottish heritage in the "New World" to show pride in their background and respect for their pioneer ancestors who were instrumental in developing the countries in which they now live.

It was not until the Scottish (Jacobite) rebellions, the outlawing of bagpipes and the prohibition of the wearing of Highland garb (both kilts and tartans) in 1746-1747, that the Lowland Scots gradually adopted Highland dress as a form of rebellion against the Crown.

However the first Tartan Day in the United States at the national level was observed on April 6th, 1997.
However, on the morning of March 20, 1998, the proposed Resolution that was to establish Tartan day had not been brought to the floor for action.

Whereas the Irish St Patrick’s Day occurs in the Spring, when the weather in North America and, indeed, in Northern Europe, is favourable for outdoor activities, St Andrews Day on 30th November is more often than not cold and wet, not exactly encouraging for parades and celebrations in the open air.
Tartan Day represents a platform from which to present a vibrant and vital Scotland of the future.
