Tartan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tartan is particularly associated with Celtic counties (and especially Scotland, a constituent country of the United Kingdom).
In the days of Martin Martin (circa 1700), the tartans seemed to be used to distinguish the inhabitants of different districts and not the inhabitants of different families as at present.
The tartan of a Scottish clan is a sequence of colours and shades unique to the material, authorised by the clan society for use by members of that clan for kilts, ties, and other garments and decorations.

Techno Music - ALKIMIA - Techno Music
Techno is a form of electronic music that emerged in the mid-1980s and primarily refers to a particular style developed in and around Detroit and subsequently adopted by European producers.
The music's producers were using the word "techno" in a general sense as early as 1984 (as in Cybotron's seminal classic "Techno City"), and sporadic references to an ill-defined "techno-pop" could be found in the music press in the mid-1980s.
Tartan techno, originating in Scotland in 1991 and influenced by European techno, using vocals and piano melody hooks.

tartan - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about tartan
Woollen cloth woven in specific chequered patterns individual to Scottish clans, with stripes of different widths and colours crisscrossing on a coloured background; it is used in making skirts, kilts, trousers, and other articles of clothing.
Developed in the 17th century, tartan was banned after the 1745 Jacobite rebellion, and not legalized again until 1782.
However, the vessel and the swimmer insensibly neared one another, and in one of its tacks the tartan bore down within a quarter of a mile of him.

LyricsVault: History of music; Techno   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
In the years immediately following the first techno compilation's release, techno was referenced in the dance music press as Detroit's relatively high-tech, mechanical brand of house music, because on the whole, it retained the same basic structure as the soulful, minimal, post-disco style that was emanating from Chicago, New York and London at the time.
Some of the most effective techno music consists of little more than cleverly programmed drum patterns that interplay with different types of reverb and frequency filtering, mixed in such a way that it's not clear where the instrument's timbres end and the effects begin.
Instead of employing traditional compositional techniques, the techno musician treats the electronic studio as one large, complex instrument: an interconnected orchestra of machines, each producing timbres that are at once familiar and alien.

Bouncy techno - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A combination of techno staccato riffs with off-beat stabs at a fast tempo, this basic sounding hardcore music popularized by record producer Scott Brown was prominent in the north United Kingdom rave scene and soon in the Netherlands, with the Dutch similarly producing large quantities of this lighter more melodious gabber-like style.
Indeed, various old bouncy techno tracks from the early-1990s have seamlessly been adapted to the UK Hardcore sound in the mid-2000s due to their shared identity (the original 1990s versions are usually included in the release too).
Tartan techno is a term more directed to the overall Scottish rave music scene, of which hardcore music is one component, albeit the far greatest in quantity and popularity.

Prodigy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
With Moby now doing a rock-guitar thing, the new techno scene is dominated by singer-less groups like the Chemical Brothers, Orbital, and the Orb.
And as cool as the sounds they generate may be, it's still been a tough sell on the mass market, where audiences are used to taking their cues from a frontperson.
The irony, though, is that Prodigy are trying to spearhead the techno revolution by doing away with most of what makes techno revolutionary: from the endless linear progressions of beats to the faceless presentation of sample-collaged compositions.

Maybe Oxide Pang’s intention was to highlight the difference between the mundanity of real-life compared to its fictitious big-screen companion, but even this seems unlikely as the basic plot and characters of the film fall into stereotype fairly quickly.
This release from Tartan delivers a nice clear transfer of the film which deals with contrasting dark sequences and bright colours well.

The Film Asylum Review - Primer (Shane Carruth, David Sullivan)
It’s just that, for me a film should be a fun experience, but Primer seemed to avoid every attempt I made to reach out and grasp it, simply adding to my mounting frustration and ultimately leading to a sense that I just wasted 74 minutes of my life.
As mentioned above, the highlight of Tartan Video’s release is the informative commentary by Shane Carruth who gives very little away regarding his plot (which is a shame) but does reveal various intriguing details about the cast, crew and locations.
This commentary is much less formal and has some pretty funny banter thrown between the various participants but it is less informative than the first from a technical perspective.

 Music genres
Electronic music that does not fall into the new age, techno or dance categories are often referred to as "left-field" or "electronica" (although there are critics who maintain that the term "electronica" is an invention of the media).
Styles of electronica include ambient, downtempo, illbient and trip-hop (among countless others, see list of electronic music genres), which are all related in that they usually rely more on their atmospheric qualities than electronic dance music, and make use of slower, more subtle tempos, sometimes excluding rhythm completely.
Electro hip hop was invented in the 1980s, but is distinctly different from most old school hip hop (as is go go, another old style).
