 Tarzan (1999)
Tarzan himself, voiced by Tony Goldwyn (Tony who?), is nevertheless wonderful in all three presented life stages–infant, juvenile, and fully-formed, loincloth-sporting muscle man, who whips from tree to tree faster than a Jedi speeder or The Little Mermaid.
This is where the soon-to-be-called Tarzan is rescued by a nurturing gorilla called Kala (voiced by Glenn Close), much to the disapproval of the group's domineering leader, Kerchak (Lance Henriksen).
As a juvenile, Tarzan provides the film's funniest scene (according to my eight year old) when, on a dare, he attempts to retrieve a hair from the tail of an elephant and is mistaken for a piranha, causing much consternation and trampling of plant life.

 Review: Tarzan (1999)
Tarzan frequently feels excluded from his clan, and is thrilled to find Jane (Minnie Driver), the English woman who has accompanied her father, Professor Porter (Nigel Hawthorne), and the hunter Clayton (Brian Blessed).
Minnie Driver is very expressive, especially in the frantically-paced scenes in which Tarzan rescues her from vicious baboons.
Another aspect of language handled cleverly is the English spoken by Tarzan while he is with the gorillas, versus the English he learns from Jane and her father.

This is the second film this year to portray North Koreans in a sympathetic light; the last director to try this did so in the 1960s, and was subsequently jailed for his efforts.
What makes this film so bad is not so much the cast, chosen from a growing population of Western actors working in Korea (although in truth their acting is quite terrible), but rather the script, which is packed with more tired cliches than I ever knew existed.
With its splintered narrative and hardly a drop of blood, the film lingers instead on the dynamics of the classroom and the intensity of its young heroines.

Tarzan is actually a curious motion picture in that it's Disney's most obviously kid-targeted animated movie since the Magic Kingdom returned to the top a decade ago.
Tarzan is surprised to find others like him, and, after he saves Jane from a band of angry baboons, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to her, and she to him.
Tarzan is voiced by Tony Goldwyn, who gives the hero a sort of ordinary voice (his features are also very obvious in the character's face).

With music by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Phil Collins, "Tarzan" is an adventure that traces the story of a human baby who is orphaned in the African jungle and lovingly raised by a family of apes.
Tarzan's peaceful and sheltered world is turned upside down by the arrival of a human expedition and the revelation that he is one of them.
As he struggles to decide which "family" he belongs with, his dilemma is further complicated by his feelings for a beautiful young woman named Jane and the discovery that a trusted member of his new human "family" is plotting to harm the apes.

 Tarzan (1999)
Raised by a family of gorillas, including the loving Kala and the wisecracking Terk, Tarzan develops all the instincts and prowess of a jungle animal.
The film does nothing particularly new or fresh; we get the usual adventures and the usual kooky sidekicks and the usual love interest and the usual menacing villain.
I think that's because it actually shows a viability to the lifestyles lived by both Tarzan and Jane - we see the positives and negatives of each person's background - whereas in the older film we are hit over the hit with the (supposed) superiority of Pocahontas' culture.

As luck would have it, one day Tarzan narrowly saves the good-natured, young British woman, Jane (Minnie Driver), who is on a gorilla expedition with her professor father (Nigel Hawthorne) and the smarmy, rifle-toting Clayton (Brian Blessed), from a pack of wild monkeys.
Discovering for the first time that there are beings just like him, Tarzan grows a fondness for Jane, who teaches him English in exhange for Apish, and finds himself suddenly torn between two completely different worlds--the one he grew up in, and the one he is supposed to belong in.
The film is constantly an enjoyable piece of eye candy, with the scenes of Tarzan swinging through the trees almost as exhilarating as riding a rollercoaster.

Disney's Tarzan, a breath-taking jungle adventure full of humourous characters, is a magnificent adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's Classic story of the ape man.
