Tarzan (1999 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tarzan saves Jane from some angry baboons and tries to communicate with her as he can't speak English(Tarzan is speaking gorilla to the other gorillas and Tantor but it's translated into English).
Tarzan leads them to Nala and Terk but Kerchak appears and is hostile to Tarzan and his company.

Tarzan himself, voiced by Tony Goldwyn (Tony who?), is nevertheless wonderful in all three presented life stages–infant, juvenile, and fully-formed, loincloth-sporting muscle man, who whips from tree to tree faster than a Jedi speeder or The Little Mermaid.
This is where the soon-to-be-called Tarzan is rescued by a nurturing gorilla called Kala (voiced by Glenn Close), much to the disapproval of the group's domineering leader, Kerchak (Lance Henriksen).
As a juvenile, Tarzan provides the film's funniest scene (according to my eight year old) when, on a dare, he attempts to retrieve a hair from the tail of an elephant and is mistaken for a piranha, causing much consternation and trampling of plant life.

Little Tarzan is orphaned and adopted by a mother gorilla (voice by Glenn Close), who had lost her own baby to the same hungry cat.
As Tarzan grows to be a young boy, he romps and wrestles and generally has a great time with a mischievous young gorilla (energetically voiced by Rosie O'Donnell).
Tarzan is aware that he's different from the rest of his jungle family, so when he meets Jane and discovers there are more of his kind around, a sweet little romance develops.

Tarzan is actually a curious motion picture in that it's Disney's most obviously kid-targeted animated movie since the Magic Kingdom returned to the top a decade ago.
Tarzan is surprised to find others like him, and, after he saves Jane from a band of angry baboons, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to her, and she to him.
Tarzan is voiced by Tony Goldwyn, who gives the hero a sort of ordinary voice (his features are also very obvious in the character's face).

One key feature of Tarzan is that the characters don't break out into a song every thirty seconds, but the songs are in the background while the action on screen is taking place.
Tarzan is missing the magic that other Disney movies, such as Aladdin and The Lion King, have had.
Tarzan isn't for children under 7, due to the darkness and some violent sequences which don't belong in a children's film.

Tarzan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Tarzan is the orphaned son of aristocratic English parents marooned in Africa in the late 19th century.
Upon their deaths, he is adopted and raised by a band of apes which Burroughs calls "mangani," a species not otherwise known to science, but with characteristics of gorillagorillas, chimpanzeechimpanzees, and early hominidhominids, including a primitive form of speech.
The Tarzan story is informed by non-scientific ideas about evolution and "social darwinism" explored in much popular literature of this period, such as that of Jack London and Robert E. Howard.

Without those hits, Disney's animated pictures were stuck in a rut; the movies made between roughly $100 million (actually, low-water mark Hercules in 1997 was a tad under that total) and $141 million (1995's Pocahontas).
I think that's because it actually shows a viability to the lifestyles lived by both Tarzan and Jane - we see the positives and negatives of each person's background - whereas in the older film we are hit over the hit with the (supposed) superiority of Pocahontas' culture.

Trivia: Tarzan has been adapted from its book many times over the years and is second only to Dracula in the adaptation chart.
It's thoroughly integrated, non-formulaic, and is the first Disney animated film to have a grown man as its hero (all the others have had heroines, animals, or teenage males - Aladdin and Quasimodo - as its centers).
Tarzan's issues involve an identity crisis and a social adjustment disorder and he's far more intelligent and clever than any of the human actors who have portrayed him thus far.

This is a Tarzan unlimited by what human actors are capable of physically, and in terms of authenticity it makes all the difference in the world.
Disney's Tarzan is an indelible, honest hero voiced by Tony Goldwyn (best known as the bad yuppie in "Ghost") with noble grunts and cat-like curiosity to go with his requisite Sunday school lesson identity hang-ups that stem from being raised by gorillas.
Complementing the standard "me Tarzan, you Jane" stuff is an intelligently symbolic scene of Tarzan removing of Jane's crisp white gloves (after rescuing her from a cougar, natch).

 Tarzan (1999): Reviews
Although the villainous parts of this Tarzan are a bit hazy and the animal attraction between Tarzan and Jane a bit chaste, the film, nevertheless, works both for children and the adults.
The main problem with Tarzan is its story, which, after a strong start, finds a steady groove and stays with it, offering no particular highs or lows.
The movie is a collision between inspiration and tastelessness, between the defiantly quirky and the wholesomely homogenized.

But whereas the power of Spielberg’s movie lies primarily in its visual depiction of the total confusion of battle and the ‘War is Hell’ meesage, Malick opts for a (mostly) less graphic portrayal, concentrating far more on the participants’ fear than their confusion.

 RC DVD Review: Tarzan (1999)
Tarzan is positively the best Disney animated movie to come out in quite a while.
The movie starts off rather unusually with a musical montage of two events: Tarzan’s parents being shipwrecked on an island and building a tree house, and an ape family losing their young baby to a leopard.
The movie actually begins when the ape mother hears a baby crying in the jungle and goes to investigate.

For most of you, the story should be very familiar as it traces the adventures of a human baby (Tarzan) orphaned in the African jungle and subsequently raised by a family of apes.
With effective voiceover work by Tony Goldwyn (as Tarzan), Glenn Close (as Tarzan's ape-mother Kala), Rosie O'Donnell (as Tarzan's friend Terk), Lance Henriksen (as silverback ape Kerchak) and Minnie Driver (as Jane), Disney has put together a wonderful ensemble that manages to bring each of this film's characters to life.
With this movie they also put dreamworks again in a difficult position to compete with the poularity of Disney.

Edgar Rice Burroughs' most famous hero gets the Disney treatment: After a shipwreck Tarzan's parents are killed by a leopard and baby Tarzan is adopted by a family of gorillas.
The same leopard chases a human baby (with a similar nutritional intent in mind) during an extended scene, wounds a large gorilla, and eventually fights Tarzan who's armed with a spear.
At one point both Tarzan and the leopard have scratches on them and they fall into a hole.

This is apparent from the absolutely stunning opening sequence, a montage showcasing Tarzan's shipwreck and the destruction of his family while in counterpoint we see a Gorilla family losing their only child.
Based on the character created by Edgar Rice Burroghs in 1912, Tarzan is the story of a baby that loses his parents on a shipwreck and eventually is raised by a family of gorillas.
The producers wanted to be as true to Burroughs' vision of Tarzan as possible: a man who could do everything like the animals he imitated; but still be intelligent, introspective, desiring to know where he came from, why he was different, where he belonged.

Disney's Tarzan doesn't wander far from the familiar story of a shipwrecked baby who is brought up by apes in Africa.
The other half of this second disc, the "Tarzan Archives," is a slickly produced filler--more publicity fluff than real insight on the development of the film and the animation process.
Much better are the three abandoned scenes (with voices and storyboards), including a much fiercer opening and ending, plus dozens of sketches made over the years as the designers pursued the luscious look of the film.
