The Fast Carrier Task Force, known at different times as Task Force 38 and Task Force 58, was the main striking force of the United States Navy in the latter half of the Pacific War.
TF 38 came into existence in August 1943, built around Saratoga">USS Saratoga, and under the command of Rear Admiral Frederick Sherman.
The force became TF 38 again on 26 August 1944 under Admiral William Halsey, Jr.

  THE BATTLE OF THE PHILIPPINE SEA Fast Carriers
This force was the Pacific War's equivalent of the great gun-armed battlefleets of earlier conflicts.
From early 1944 the Fast Carrier Force was known as 'Task Force 58' when serving under Admiral Spruance's Fifth Fleet, and as 'Task Force 38' when organised as part of Admiral Halsey's Third Fleet.
For the Marianas operation, as 'Task Force 58,' the Force contained seven large fleet carriers and eight light carriers.

CTF 38 informed by CTG 38.1 that the center of the storm as shown by radar was bearing 245° distance 40 miles from the Task Group moving on course 030° and that speed had been reduced to 12 knots due to John Rodgers steering casualty.
Proceeded on course to assigned rendezvous with Task Force 38.

Oregon Public Broadcasting reports that the Columbia River Crossing Task Force received the staff recommendation yesterday to tear down the existing spans of the Interstate Bridge and replace it.
It's certainly not an enviable job to be on a task force with 38 other people, and it's probably less enviable to work for that task force.
The task force has cleared some important hurdles, but their biggest challenges lie ahead: convincing the public and Congress to adopt a specific proposal.

Task Group 52.14, which was operating about 15 miles to the southward, underwent an air attack resulting in damage to the USS Fanshaw Bay (CVE70).
She arrived in the Marianas fueling area on July 10 and joined Task Group 50.17 to conduct fueling operations with Task Force 52 and Task Force 58, returning to Eniwetok on July 28.
After conducting various fueling operations with Task Force 38, the Evans was assigned temporary duty with Task Force 38 and later assigned to Task Unit 94.6.2 (Ulithi Patrol and Escort Force).

Unfavorable weather closed in on the task force and on 26 June 1952, the ship was detached to proceed to Sasebo for duty as the "ready" carrier.
While en route to Yokosuka, she was suddenly called back to the task force to take the place of the USS Boxer which had been seriously damaged by a hanger deck fire.

 Endgame: The Final Strikes on Japan, 10th Jly to 15th August, 1945
Task Force 38, comprising three American carrier groups under Vice-Admiral John S. McCain, commanded by Rear-Admirals Thomas L. Sprague, Gerald F. Bogan (unusually strong) and Arthur W. Radford, had the assistance of the British Pacific Fleet under Vice-Admiral Sir Bernard Rawlings, the British carrier group being under Vice-Admiral Sir Philip Vian.
All of Task Force 38 sortied from Leyte on July 1st, slowly proceeding north by west, passing south of Iwo Jima and reaching a position 200nm to ist east on July 8th, fuelling there from ServRon 10 oilers.
AA was heavy, and repeatedly, the Allied forces had to shoot enemy aircraft approaching the Task Force out of the sky.

Despite a northeasterly course in an attempt to escape the wrath of the storm, the typhoon center's closest point of approach to the task group on 8 November was 200 degrees at 45 nautical miles.

 USS Twining (DD-540), Fletcher-class destroyer
On 15 September 1944, the Twining left Eniwetok and reported to the Fast Carrier Task Force 38, and operated in support of the Palau invasion (19 September–28 September) and the initial raids on Luzon (21-22 September) proceeding to and replenishing at Ulithi Atoll from 1 October to 6 October.
The Fleet sortied from Ulithi on 10 February 1945, now under the command of Admiral Spruance and known as "Famous Task Force 58" and proceeded to the home waters of the Japanese Empire where the initial Naval raids on Tokyo were carried out as a diversion for the support of the Iwo Jima occupation.
We returned to Task Force 38 and have continued the air strikes until today, 15 August 1945, when we were informed that Japan had agreed to unconditional surrender terms and ordered to cease hostilities.

Halsey's Third Fleet and Admiral John S. McCain's Task Force 38, became the Fifth Fleet, commanded by Admiral Raymond A. Spruance, and Task Force 58, under Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher.
TF 58's mission was to draw Japan's attention away from the impending landings, and hinder Japan's ability to throw air attacks against the landing forces.
Excitement over approaching so close to the enemy's home mixed with apprehension due to knowledge that for more than half of TF 58's air groups, this was their first mission.

I was serving on board Nicholas and we were operating with Halsey’s Task Force 38 off the coast of Japan.
We were assigned to Task Group 38.4, of of four Task Groups of Task Force 38.
Since the details of the official surrender had to be worked out, TF 38 continued to operate off the coast of Japan.
